Leigh, is this the breed that attacked and killed that woman in California?
- By Leigh [us] Date 19.02.02 17:31 UTC
No idea

Yup, just did a search and got CNN and ABC reports up the ying yang. The dogs that attacked and killed a woman in the front entrance of her home were Presa Canarios. It's a very complicated story. Here's a few links to fill you in if you want to know more.

I know this doesn't mean all presas attack and kill people. Just that these ones did. Very very sad. :(

Do you mean where a dog and bitch were involved - the woman was coming home from doing the shopping and was attacked just outside her own front door - yes they were Presa Canario :-(
- By Quinn [gb] Date 19.02.02 22:20 UTC
Leigh, I checked out your links and there is in fact a breeder in this country in Bournmouth. Read it on their message board. ;)

I stand corrected :-)

The dog in the link to ARBA is not a Perro de Presa Canario

IN SAN FRANCISCO A DOG KILL TO A WOMAN

Wrote in february 2001 -Tenerife-Canary Islands-Spain

In San Francisco a (supposed) Presa Canario Dog kill to a woman, and this make a tremendous commotion, the journalists, the reporters, all the newspapers, weekly, the public opinion (ay the public opinion!, what dangerous is when acts under the misinformed pressure), the Law and the Justice of USA begins their activity. Ignorance on subject is great, semi-truths circulate everywhere, must to kill the dog, they will say -it seems that already have killed it, and it seems me well -, has to kill to all dogs that kills people -as if every day dogs killed to pile of good citizens, we are so customary to that the humans kill the humans, with the arms, the automobiles, the Justice, the drug, the surgery, the tobacco, the alcohol, with the medicines that sometimes kill more than they cure, ay, the pharmaceutical industry and some doctors!, with the hunger, the wars in name of The Peace, with the pumps antiperson and other devices to kill that are legally sells to other countries in conflict, generally poor, with the not-respect to the natural reserves, the ethnic minorities, the culture of the ethnic minorities, etc., we are so customary to that the humans kill the humans, I say, that when a dog kills a person it seems that the dogs kills half humanity, and the best way to solve the problem is prohibiting the breed and sale of a canine breed, or several whom nothing they have to do with the dog or dogs that at a given moment killed a woman, a men, a boy, in the North American territories, or in any other country.
No, Bane, the delinquent dog, the dog that has killed the poor woman, is not a Presa Canario Dog, is-a-pathological-case product of crossings carried out in USA between dogs type presa imported of the Canary Islands with dogs type presa produced in USA (whom nothing they have to do with the Canary Islands) in which predominated the blood, or genetic inheritance, by the crossings with this breed, of the American Pit Bull Terrier. I have been coming denouncing this reality by active and passive for many years PSEUDOPRESAS canarios are that and not another thing. PSEUDOPRESAS canarios has been born to the shelter, or shades, of the Presa Canario Dog. The eagerness to make easy and in short term money has induced to many people (unconscious, or without scruples) to breed and sell PSEUDOPRESAS canarios in many countries, profiting the fashion of the Presa Canario Dog.
The Presa Canario Dog is not that that outside our insulars borders many sell like authentic native dogs of presa of the Canary Islands.
The Presa Canario Dog is psychically stable, affectionate with the family, good guardian and defender of its territory, brave, nothing biter, able to coexist with other domestic animals, when he has grow up with them from pup. In the Canary Islands there have been no behavior problems, aggressions, deaths of humans, on the part of Presa Canario Dogs. There are presas canarios dogs that can get to bite the intruder, or delinquent who enter in his territory, but never until killing it.
A single case has not occurred to date. But it is that the genetic base of the true Presa Canario Dog (modern) is the Majorero Cattle Dog, animal very intelligent, able to distinguish any unforeseen situation that can take place at any time, of day or at night, in or outside its territory, and consequently to avoid the looting or robbery in properties of its master. The genetic inheritance of the Majorero Cattle Dog, and therefore its behavior, is very present in the Presa Canario Dog (true).
The American Pit Bull Terrier, however, is totally strange to the Presa Canario Dog, and it does not have to surprise us that some dogs type presa in which is put the APBT behave, in certain circumstances in an unexpected and undesired way.
Bane, the dog that has killed a woman in San Francisco is anything except a Perro de Presa Canario.

WHAT ARE PSEUDOPRESAS CANARIOS?

I have been several years saying that in the world there are more pseudopresas canarios than presas canarios, not only in USA, in where it seems that it has pierced deep my message on the matter, but in all the countries in which "presas canarios" grows up (thus, between quotes). Are not few those that a day discovered the lode Presa Canario and immediately they began to exploited it. And due that of which the perro de Presa Canario is a product of crossings..., true?, then why to import dogs of the Canary Islands, being similar here, in the next street - I do not know in what they were similar, or they are similar, but... -.
Certainly some fans imported dogs of presa, or type presa, from the Canary Islands few years ago, but, with what knowledge of the breed in phase of gestation?, and what dogs imported? At the end of the decade of the 80 of the last century (XX) Antonio Cabezas Albamonte (more important hadler than has given Spanish cinofilia) made famous a dog named Rocote (Del Jardín Canario), and his owner -Julian Celis- swelled himself to sell children of Rocote -some finish in USA-, and of the sister of Rocote, and a son of Rocote, and..., in short, he sold all what he wanted, because this cinofilia of the exhibitions and shows causes this type of business.
Rocote, just like his sister Princesa, was not a Perro de Presa Canario, I denounced it repeatedly in those days, was a badly racially mixed of a female Bullmastiff called CHUNGA DE TIMANFAYA, LOE 235858, and a dog descending of Bullterrier and namely with what more, named Roco.
Dogs product of crossings in first or second generation certain canaries breeders exported many by those dates, and then displayed them in society, their new owners, like authentic native presa canario, of pure breed, of course, and to breed and to sell, that for something had made the investment. The products born of the mating of those dogs little gave: absolute absence racial, behavioral, homogeneity, etc.
Now, many are those that asked, in what is different a pseudopresa from a Perro de Presa Canario?, to these many I would answer them that first that must do is to locate themselves in the time, and in the Canary Islands, that is in where the perro de presa canario is being developed. The actual presa canario dogs -we leave of side the presudopresas canarios that grow up in the Canary Islands, that are more numerous of which much people imagine- are more near the racial pattern that those that grew up in the decade of the 80. However the descendants of the presas that were exported in that same decade are worse than their imported ancestros - to say that only in part they descend from those imported dogs of the Canary Islands -.

And now we go for the key question, "in what the pseudopresas are different from the Presas canarios?". Answer: Perros de Presas Canarios are all those units (good, mediocre, or bad) that descend (100 percents) of perros de presa canarios; pseudopresas are those units that do not descend from Presas Canarios, or only in part. But if they are all product of crossings!, will be able to object the clever, or thoughtless, on duty. No, all are not product of crossings carried out in the Canary Islands, with the idiosyncrasy of the fan of the Canary Islands; and believe me that the idiosyncrasy (of the canary fan relative to the Perro de Presa Canario) is peculiar and unique, does not fit you the smaller doubt.
Outside the Canary Islands, taking advantage of the fashion of our breed (Presa Canario) has crossed the presas imported from the Canary Islands with Pit Bull, with Bandog (Pit Bull + Neopolitan Mastiff female, etc., etc.) and the product has sold it, are selling it, like authentic native Perros de Presa Canarios. No, men, a little respect, do not use the name of our moloso to sell the product of your crossings. Ours, only ours, and those that descend from ours in one hundred percent, are the Perros de Presa Canarios. You, no matter from the country that you are, to your dogs presa type called it as if a native breed it was: Italian Presa, Czechoslovakian Presa, American Presa, Dutch Presa, German Presa, Russian Presa, Ukrainian Presa, etc. Do not continue using the name of our dog of presa to fill the pockets. Fill the pockets by your own merits.

Thanks for that Manuel Curto;) I think it just goes to show that most breeds can be dangerous if put in the wrong hands and genetics allowed to be meddled with. It is awful when your breed receives bad publicity and everyone tars the breed with the same brush:( Rottweilers have an extremely bad name but yet my friend owns two who are the softest, most gentle friendly giants you could ever meet- I would trust them with my life, more importantly I'd leave my children alone with them and know they'd come to no harm and this is a breed that many say you just can't trust:confused: I do understand though in the wrong hands Rottweilers could be lethal! A bloke who lives down the road has one actually- he never walks her or anything (he's only just got her at about 18mth old) you can tell- she's just for the image- he's a short bloke who goes weight training, fights in pubs etc! A time bomb waiting to go off if you ask me:(
