Hi. Please can you help?
We have just got a wheaten pup on saturday. She is fab, but has a few problems which- if not stopped soon, may lead to something bad when she is older, but i have no idea how to stop them!

1) she barks constantly at night. Will this carry on for ages- or will she learn?
2) She loves to bite people. Even if you say NO with force, and pull away, she does not listen, will she grow out of it?
3)I am also worried about her totally egnoring people. When should she start to recognise her name? when we encourage her to run to us- we say "come molly" so she gets te idea, and we gve her a fuss. but when whe is not wanting to come to us- and we call her- sehe totally engores us!- please put my mind at rest...

Oh Saffy......slow down. You have only had her a couple of days, I am assuming she is around 8 weeks.

1. She shouldn't be barking all night. What is she sleeping in and where? It might be that we can advise on the sleeping arrangements. Do you have a little game with her before bedtime to tire her out, but importantly let her settle before putting her to bed or she will be left while she still wants to play.

2. Puppy biting is unfortunately something we all have to go through. We forget how bad it is until the new puppy comes along. Don't shout but calmly tell her no and if it gets bad or she is over excited with it, ignore her completely until she settles down, she will eventually get the message.

3. I don't think she is purposely ignoring you, she is still finding her feet with new strange people. Call her name when you know she is going to respond ie looking at you or coming towards you. It is not that she is disobeying you, she is just a baby and you need to spend these few weeks building a bond between you rather then anything else.

Don't panic......chill out a bit and enjoy her

Regards
Sandra

Thanks.
I was just worried that she was gong to become a trouble maker if we let her get away with all of this. Is the biting due to teething? i just know that if we let her do this- when she is older, she will have much bigger teeth, so a much bigger problem!

I suppose she is good really. She knows where her toilet area is, and goes to it when she needs to go. (outside)

we do try to sleepy her first, but she loves to sleep on our legs or on the kitchen floor ans not in her crate! are you supposed to shut the crate door behind her?

Saffy
two days is not very long in which to learn her name . Pups aent born understanding english so for all she knows you could be saying anything to her .
With perseverance and patience she will come to know her name .
As for the biting ALL pups mouthe . They do this until their new teeth come through . Could be for a couple of months . You just have to remove your fingers/hands/toes/nose  whatever it is she has taken a fancy to and tell her NO every time. It does NOT mean she will be aggessive -it is perfectly natural and normal.

Hi Saffy
1. Yes she will get better at night. Remember she is in a totally new world with strange smells and away from her mum and brothers and sisters where she felt safe. Do a search on here and you will find loads of tips to try. The first one is to give her an old T shirt that smells of you as a blanket. A ticking clock in the room etc.
2. When she nips make a yelp like a puppy who has been hurt and she'll get the message.
3. It will be a while before she recognises her name. Make sure you do not over-do the calling, as too much and she will always ignore you. Just occasionally is enough at the moment and remember that you have to make yourself more interesting than what she happens to be doing at the time. Get down on the floor, say Molly Come in an excited kind of voice, clap your hands and make it so she wants to come to you, then lots pf praise and a reward for getting it right. One good tip is to have a toy which is looked on as yours, not hers - she will want it and when she has done something right play with her with it for a while, and after her little training session is over, put it away for next time.
Just remember it is VERY early days, and the first thing she needs to learn is to be sure of her new surroundings.

I have always shut the crate door at night, but do make sure there is something in it all snuggly, I usually cover all but the door with a blanket or sheet, it makes them feel more secure. You will have to get up early to let her out though.
