Our new puppy arrives on sunday. I've read all the advice on crate training and notice that you are supposed to make sure the crate is small enough so the puppy can't use it as a loo also. When we went to choose her at the breeder's house she had a big crate where all the puppies lived and there was newspaper as a base which was used as a loo. Will this make a difference to her attitude to the small crate I plan to have here for her? Obviously I plan to take her out as soon as she needs to go, but I am wondering if the little crate will confuse the issue

i think the thing to do would be to buy a crate for the size of dog she is going to be when she's fully grown.
when you first get her put in a division [of plywood maybe] to divide the crate in two so she has an area big enough to sleep and stretch out in that's all. this will basically just be her bed and she shouldn't want to soil it at all.

gradually move the partition along using more of the unused area of crate as she gets bigger and needs a bigger sleeping area. hope this helps and good luck.

i got my pups carrier for a fiver, but now she is outgrowing it and i have to look for another! mine did have a couple of accidents in her bed when she was tiny, but it really upset her and helped her learn to be clean very quickly - she was house trained in about 2-3 weeks.
good luck.
