Topic Dog Boards / General / Help - He's eaten a chicken bone!
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 13.11.03 21:03 UTC
Hi Diesel has just eaten a bone out of a chicken breast  He came through looking very pleased with himself , it was my fault, I left it in a carrier bag along with some chips, thought, stupidly, I know, that it was safe to leave hanging on the doorhandle till I went and put my shoes on to take it out to the bin, and hey presto, in seconds it was gone.
He doesn't seem any the worse for it, should I call the Vet or am I panicking over nothing??????

Hi Andy - Thanks I'm a bit of a worry wart :D He's just been sick and brought up everything else, other than the bone - Typical  But he's playing away with his toys, none the wiser for my raised heartbeat.
Thanks again for the advice :)

My 2 year old ate a chicken wing bone last week... child not dog :o lol - he was fine but I had a sleepless night going in to check on him ever half hour!

Sure Bailey will be fine :D

It's a bit late now - but the best first aid (I was told by a vet) is to encourage (ha! Not necessary with a Springer normally <G>) the dog to eat a large portion of bread - helps to pad out the bone until it reaches the digestive system proper.

Hi,

During my nurse training years ago,we were told if a child ate anything sharp by accident to give a cotton wool sandwich obviously a *very small amount *with bread for the same reason as above:-)

Hi - I did give him a couple of slices of bread, as I called my Dad in a panic :D and that's what he suggested I do - Dad's are great in a crisis aren't they? Anyway, he had a great night's sleep none the worse for his adventure....and me....well let's just say, I didn't :)

Was it raw or fresh, most raw would not cause a problem but even in a raw chicken there are some bones that are like needles. So keep an eye and if you are worried by the dogs behaviour then go straight to the vet.

Hi Jackie, it was a bone from a cooked breast, sort of like a drumstick bone. I don't know whether he crunched it or swallowed it whole, but I am watching him like a hawk, and examining all his poo  but no sign as of yet. As I said though, he seems perfectly normal, but I was more worried it could cause a blockage or perhaps if crunched, there would be any sharp bits which could do him harm. But thanks for your advice.

Well I think you are right to watch him 90% of the time the dog will get away with it but on the odd occasion it can cause a problem, the wing has 2 bone one is large and is not likely to cause trouble but the small one is sharp.

Don't go in for worrying people but if you are at all worried by the way your dog is then see a vet and don't worry too much even in the worse case the problem is able to be sorted.

He'll probably digest the bone - no evidence in his poo, other than it might be a little white. :-)

My sister's Cairn inhaled a chicken bone while he was out on his walk. My sister called the vet. The vet advised her to bring the dog in and then kept him in overnight for "observation." Talk about an easy way to extract some money - I bet the dog was alone all night in the vet's surgery too. End of story - no problem, bone was digested.

Ohh :D I thought that he'd pass the bone...imagined a bone shaped number 2  will keep an eye out for a white no.2 even :D

I don't think you would find many people feeding BARF and giving their dogs bones to chew and swallow would be doing it if they passed the bones out the back end whole! :-) Although bone-shaped poos would at least make clean-ups a bit more interesting.

Touche :D Although I didn't expect the bone to come out whole :)
Wouldn't imagine that'd be very comfy for his wee bum :) Have to say though anything that made poo picking more interesting, I'd love to hear it :)

Knackered :o ...lol
Put my shoes on top of the fridge and Dolly has stood up and got one from the heel and it's been chewed (She shown it no mercy).
So don't tell me about turning your back!!
