I'm having trouble mating my Boxer bitch.

I'm in the process of starting my Boxer kennel, affix has been granted, paperwork sorted, bitch in heat (day 11 currently)

My bitch has never been mated before and i've been advised by my vet not to miss this season as she is 4 years old, he has no doubt she is fit enough and could handle a litter.

The stud dog is very interested in the Bitch and she is standing for him, but he's not very experienced. He seems to have trouble 'finding the right spot' if you know what i mean.

So far he has penetrated her once, for a about a min, my Bitch unfortunately made a lot of noise, and put the poor lad off, so there was no tie. I'm getting frustrated as i really want everything to go to plan, i've been planning the litter for a long time and seem to be stuck at the first hurdle.

Any tips or suggestions would be fantastic.

thanks and Regards.

The stud owner may need to 'help' the dogs aim, some will allow it but some wont but it is worth a try. Or go for a dog with more experiance.

if you are gettting frustrated it will go down the lead to her,she will pick up your feeling to,just be clam and relax then the bitch will,i ve been luck with my bitches and male for stud ,but a friend bitch took 4 days to get mated both were maiden dogs but in the end she have 10 puppies, plus it may not be the right time her,1 of my bitch will mate from day 10 to13 the other one which is her daugther day 12 to 16,all bitches have not read the book of the bitch which states that most mating are 10 to 12,some are earley some are later,i would go every day back to the dog untill he will not take any interested in her, that why i always keep a boy dog he tells me when the girls are really, plus let them play up to 15 mins if they have not mated bye then put them away for 1 hour then put them back together again if playing for to long it will tired them out.

I dont have your breed of dog. But have encountered the problems you have got at the moment over the years. Normally it is because the bitch has not ovulated. I would say they just are not ready yet. Even day 11 can be too early in some cases. All bitches do not fall on the same day. Some really early as my one bitch is receptive at day 5. Then I had another one not ready until day 16. All different.
I had someone use my stud dog this year and they came too early, although he mated the bitch. She did not have pups until 3 days after her last mating. So she had still not ovulated. The sperm had stayed inside her for three days.
I also know a bitch that did not ovulate at mating, was mated 3 times and then still had not ovulated so they gave up as a best job. She whelped 11 puppies 9 weeks later. Funny things dogs.

You may have to assist the dog a bit. Sometimes you have to hold the bitch tight at the front so she cant jump forward when he gets in. Boy that sounds awful..!
Its true though.
I dont know what arrangement you have with your stud dog owner. But maybe you could find another dog that is more experienced.

You can e-mail me at home if you want some advice on how to help. I am no expert on your breed though. But can tell you a few tales about my own. ha ha..

this happened to me this season my bitch was on day 9 and i had the stud dog over for a week (my dog went to stay with the stud dogs owner), she would stand for him but then go down, i know that she can hold the weight of the stud so i just thought that she was not ready.
she has had puppies before but the stud has not, i tried every day until the dog went back (we kept him for any extra week) and she still would not hold him, i think that they might of had a quick slip but it only happened ones, if she is not in whelp is there any tips any one can give me,
i did hold her and i tried to put my arm under her to help her stand but she did not want to know. do i need to get her checked by a vet for any infection before i try again next time?

i have breed a few littles but this has never happened before, and yes i have had a bitch that like to let every one know that she did not like it (but she always wanted it again the next time LOL)

Hello, it was me that posted the origional post as a guest, problems logging on!

Just an update...

Thanks for all the help, i think i'm in a better position with the dogs than before - pardon the pun!

right,.... about the stud. The dog is rising 3 years old, and belongs to me, he isn't staying with us at the moment, with my bitch in heat, plus he's keeping my sister company at the moment, he's only literally round the corner so is quite accessable when i need him, his experience is practically nothing. :-)

My bitch is very comfortable with the dog, they get on really well so she's not uncomfortable with him at all.

When we bring him to her my bitch is SOOOO flirty with him, mounting him, standing for him, diving under him and actually lifting him up!! - which is quite comical! I've been keeping track of the progress of the matings... as follows..

11 Nov - (11 day of season) - Brief penetration, lots of noise from bitch, No tie.
12 Nov - (12 day) - Full penetration until dog stopped and turned, no noise from bitch(yay!!) dog was swelled on removal (sorry to be graphic!) NO TIE THOUGH!!
13 Nov (13 day) - Full penetration until dog stopped and turned, no noise, brief tie (2-3 mins), agasin swelled on removal

I don't know wether to be happy with the progress so far or not... i'm concerned that there has been no really long tie... should i be?? i've been constantly buried in "Book of the Bitch" which states a fertile mating is possible without one.

I'm really wanting everything to go as planned!!! (Doesn't everyone with their first litters!) :-)

The plan is to keep trying as long as she will stand for him. (??)

If a mating is fertile, i.e she is successfully mated by him, how long will she remain in heat?

thanks for everyones help at these stressful times!

Jo

edit: no one would ever know!

Welcome to the (unpredictable) world of dog breeding! Whether she has been successfully mated or not, your bitch will be in season for approx 21 days. It is not necessary for a tie to be accomplished for your bitch to be in whelp, altho' it is usual.
If she 'misses', you will have to wait until she next comes into season. As she & the dog are both maidens, you may be sensible to take her to a more experienced stud dog for your 2nd attempt!
Either your calendar's wrong or you're not in UK - we haven't reached 14.11.03 yet - or are you Mystic Meg? :D

thanks! - my mind is obviously all over the place! I don't know what day im on!! hehe

am i going mad? for some reason i seemed to think once a mating was successful the bitch would come come out of season after a few days??

Or is that stop being receptive after a few days!! ......or did i just dream that?! I've been cramming with breeding/mating/whelping information for the last few months...... hell, i need some sleep, or a drink or something!! :-) :-)

This has been a strange year! I have had quite a few bitches this year to visit my stud dogs(not boxers) & some of them have done this with our experienced male.
The bitch will stand the dog gets in but no tie or only tied for 2-3 mins! My dog looks at me as if to say 'hey this ain't right ain't she supposed to be squealing'? & the poor dog is standing there all swollen & the bitch is doing a lap of honour around the garden.
I have not go a clue why this is happening & i have never had anything so bizarre happen before but the bitches look as if they are spot on for mating & some have even been tested/swabbed before visiting to make sure they are ovulating.
3 have had pups from these type of matings but 4 haven't so will be back next season to try again.

Has anyone else noticed any problems this year with breeding in general, i know alot of the bitches are very late at coming into season i know one lady whos bitch hasn't been in for a whole year.

I've now had 5-6 possibly more successful penetrations over a 5 day period, none with a tie longer that about 5 mins!

She stands for him, he mounts and penetrates, thrusts then stops as normal, turns, but doesn't tie for very long, but he's fully swollen. ??

She on day 15 now. I don't know wether to call it a day and stop trying, she seems very reluctant to stand now, and his interest is waning, plus her discharge is very slight now, almost gone. .... i hope that's a good sign??

After the 'mating' she goes absolutely ballistic, licking and kissing his face, chasing her tail, and generally tearing about the place going bananas :-) while he gets to stand there on his tip-toes swollen up with a "what the hell's going on look on his face!"

I'm just gonna have to wait and see when she's back at the vets in 3 weeks time. She seemed ready, and stood for him, but for some reason doesn't hold him.

....very bizarre..?

Well, they've had their chance, all you can do now is wait!! The length of tie isn't always indicative of whether the mating was successful or not, so keep your fingers crossed!
