Topic Dog Boards / Health / Possible kennel cough variant
- By lel [gb] Date 14.11.03 23:45 UTC
Gus has been sneezing over the last few days and I didnt think it was too much of a concern. He has been ok in himself, still eating and pooing as normal and still his happy self.
This afternoon though he was sick -and around six this evening he vomited blood . It frightened the life out of me . Phoned the vets straight away who said the vet would hang on to see us if we wanted . <<If we wanted??>>> Blimey I was there in a flash!!
Vet Said Gus had a slight temperature but reckoned he had had a higher one a couple of days before ( and I hadnt even realised :( ) .
I asked if there as anything going around at present and he said no, not really . There were a few cases of bloody diahhorea at present but not the vomiting .
Anyway he has given him something to relax his stomach ( we are not to feed or give him water overnight - poor love) and he has had a sedative to let him sleep tonight and we are to start tablets tomorrow .
Anyway to cut a long story short , Vet says it *could* be a variant of kennel cough ??!! Although Gus hasnt coughed . Surely this doesnt explain the blood though??
I am worried sick and need some reassurance I suppose .
I feel really guilty because he is due his kennel cough booster as well . I am going to sleep downstairs with him tonight to make sure he is ok - normally he sleeps upstairs with us but he is a bit wobbly on his feet after the sedative :(

Hi Lel

Cadmus once vomited copious amounts of bright red blood, was rushed to the vets, given the all clear, came home, did it again and was rushed back again all in the space of an hour. He was given a sedative, they had a look down his gullet and gave him an antibiotic shot, and that was that. The vet was entirely at a loss as to what had caused it, because Cadmus had been perfectly well up until the moment he retched and up came the blood. He actually shouldn't have been sent home the first time, but it was a raw baby vet who saw him initially!

I'm sure Gus will be fine once the medication kicks in, especially if his Mum snuggles up to him tonight to watch over him :) Keep us posted!

Thanks for the quick reply other Lesley
this too was bright red blood . I have fingers and toes all crossed that he is fine - he is my baby and I would die if anything were to happen to him :(

I know how you're feeling about it Lel, cos I had the groggy Cadmus on my lap all afternoon and evening and was worried sick the whole time until the sedative wore off and he went back to his usual daft self. It's the sight of the blood that is so terrifying and the mind works overtime and you imagine it to be caused by something disastrous, but I just thought I would let you know that we had something similar and it turned out ok :) Keep us posted how Gus is!

Thanks everyone for your concern :)
He has had a peaceful night and was able to sleep - which is more than I did. I felt about 12 camping out on the living room floor ;)
He hasnt had anything to eat or drink yet as advised by the Vet although he is looking longingly at Josh's cooked breakfast .
He is still sniffly and sneezy but is due to start a course of antibiotics this evening ( they are huge tablets!).
The only thing concerning me is that the vet said we MUST contact him if he hasnt fully cleared up his sniffles at the end of the seven days .
I am hoping its not something he picked up from showing as it means there is a dog out there passing something around :(

Hi Lel

Glad to hear Gus had a good night Lel, even if yours wasn't so good! It is a worry showing dogs that they might pick up something, although the majority of exhibitors are very responsible and keep poorly dogs at home. Of course that doesn't help if a dog isn't showing any symptoms itself but is just carrying something. I think the vet will want Gus back again after seven days if he is not better because then the antibiotics won't have worked and they might need to look at doing a culture to find out which one would.

Ours take tablets best if we cover them up with a blob of cream cheese, Philadelphia if feeling flush, or Tesco Value stuff does the trick too although it looks revolting and I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to eat it :D

Hi Lesley,
So sorry to hear about Gus, my fingers are crossed for him, I'm sure he'll be fine though.
It's a shame you'll not be able to make Merseyside, But Gus is more important of course.
We'll get to meet up one day, I'm sure.
Take care both of you.

Michelle.

*cannot help thinking that someone must have know there dog had a problem*

Do you also *know* that dogs who have had the intranasal vaccine for kennel cough are contagious? The advice from the manufacturers is that they should be confined for 14dys after receiving it. Also it is a fact that there are many other viruses besides KC that are shed into the enviroment from vaccinated dogs.

Can`t help wondering myself, how many people are aware of this?

Christine, Spain.

ps. many of these diseases are contagious before they start showing any symptoms.
