Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Lamb Tripe vs Beef Tripe
- By jancx [eu] Date 12.11.03 17:17 UTC
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can tell me which type of tripe is better for a 6mth Bullmastiff - lamb or beef, or are they both the same? If one is better than the other what is the difference (apart from coming from a different animal of course lol)

Many Thanks
Jan

I just use the ordinary green tripe for my bullmastiffs. It's very smelly but they love it.

Hi, Thanks for that, what exactly is green tripe? I have heard of it and thought it was unwashed tripe, is that correct? Where do you obtain your tripe from? I was using Bambers best lamb tripe which Leo loved, but they seem to have gone out of business now. I've tried him with Prize Choice and Hen House beef tripe but he won't touch either of them, to be honest they don't seem to smell at all and have a very dry consistency.

I get my tripe, minced beef and raw chicken wings from a company called Berriewoods, they are based in Essex, but deliver to a wide area. They are very good, if you ring them they will send you a catalogue of the things they sell and tell you which areas they deliver to and on what day. Tel: 01787 238003.
I just use there own make tripe.

I use the best Beef Tripe . Sheep tripe tends to cause worms and your dog will need worming much more regulary if you feed sheep tripe. make sure that it is the green beef tripe that you buy. Also make sure that you add a good mixer or complete food with it as tripe on its own does'nt have a lot of nutritional value in it for a growing Bullmastiff.

Sheeps stomachs are called "paunches" not tripes, they stink! yes I know tripe stinks too, but paunches stink more. Not dissimilar to eachother so nutritionally I would think they are about the same.

Can I ask what the significance of "green" tripe is? ALL tripe is green! its only white in butchers because its been bleached.

I feed mine on "green" tripe & it's black, or grey or white!!! I think green tripe just means it's untreated & not bleached. I've heard that beef tripe is better than sheep, but don't know why & can't see why worms are more likely from sheep!!
Whatever, they do all stink!

Yes your quite right tripe does come in slightly different colours green tripe as it is refered to is the prefered tripe fed to dogs. Sheep are hosts for far more parasites than cattle so therefore the dog would be ingesting more into their stomachs from eating tripe offal or paunches whatever you want to call it from sheep than from cattle. that is why i prefer to feed mine beef tripe.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll try Berriewoods and see if they deliver "up north"

How "Up North"? I get my tripe from Greaves (Lancashire) Very reliable, but your have to buy a minimum of about 500lbs.

No, just one (ex-Iceland!!!!!!)

I feed beef (green) tripe which I get from landywoods. You could try them if Berriwoods dont deliver up north. I know landywoods do. Ive used their meats for a long time and found it very good as well as the service. They also supply ex Iceland freezers very cheap.

CAn I ask just how cheap is cheap for an ex Iceland freezer as I do really need a new freezer for dogs stuff. It's amazing just how much you buy when you have a freezer and then find it doesn't all fit in !

£160-£170 they can hold up to 700lb of meat and are I think 14ft long. They are commercial ones and are fan assisted so switch on and off and are cheaper to run. The chest freezer I used to have was just a domestic one and was on all the time.
