Though i am probably over-reacting (no surprise there!) I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice on whether i am worrying needlessly. As some of you already know(!) my staffie bitch is now approaching her 6th week of pregnancy. The problem is she has developed a really awful cold, almost luminose green snot! She is very lethargic, and i have not been able to get her to go out for a walk, she just wanders around with her nose on the ground looking sorry for herself. She is eating ok, has no temperature and there seems to be no other problems. I was just wondering if this kind of cold/infection is any danger to the pups, or should i just leave her to sleep it off? Also been reading about pyrometria and am absolutely paranoid!
Also she has quite a lot of vaginal mucas discharge, it is colourless and doesn't smell, and the vet says this is fine - just wondering if anyone has any other experience of this.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you need to get your vet to have a look at your bitch - dogs don't get colds in the sense we do but the green nasal discharge suggests an infection of some kind which is going to need treatment. The clear vaginal discharge is normal in pregnancy & is nothing to worry about, but the green snot needs attention!!

Ithink you should go back to that vet at once and tell him green muccous is infection , and could be distemper or similiar , and im sorry but yes if there are pups it could very well do damage to the unborns, have you had her scanned to see if she is in pup , because if she isent in pup and she is discharging then it could be closed pyometra, please dont think im saying she is ill im not, because im not looking at the little dog so how can I tell. im just letting you know what it could be, and that it neeeds sorting , one way or another , hoping all goes well mari

Hi, I worry all the time about everything! Can understand where your coming from. It also dosen't help that a dog can't tell us what is wrong (well they do in their own way).
You should definetly take her to the vet. Will be worth every penny to give you peace of mind.
Sounds like she probably needs some antibotics to get her over her cold.(course I'm no vet). My bitch who just whelped a litter about two weeks ago had a clear vaginal discharge around the same time in her pregnancy as your dog. However since you should take her in for the runny nose also have the vet check the discharge if for nothing else than to put you at ease.
Good luck and let us know the progress!

Yes, she has been scanned twice already and has about 4 little ones in there. Vet says the clear mucous is perfectly normal, and that is in great condition - this was last week. Cleo has often had this kind of cold-type infection at about this time of year, I call it a cold, as it is only from her nose and she gets terrible sneezes for a day and then is fine. Today she is fine, and was desperate to go for walk this morning. I willl ring the vet and ask his advice though, he is a very sensible man and will pretty much always sort it out by phone - I will keep you posted.

Cleopatra, you are so lucky having a vet that will talking things through on the phone - mine almost always say 'bring her in'!!! I'm sure they see the pound signs........... Hope everything goes well and Mum and pups are fit and well :-)

Have spoken to my vet and he says that there is no need to worry as all animals pick up infections from time to time. She is fine in herself, eating well, and happy enough (except for this big stomach which she doean't quite seem to understand yet!) and there is no more snot! Distemper is out of the question, as is pyrometria, but i shall keep a close eye on her all the same.
My vet is lovely, plus he knows how stressed cleo gets when she has to go to the vet so at the moment we are trying to keep it down to a minimum. He is also very down to earth and will never give medication unnecessarily.
Anyway, thanks for all your advice, mum is fine, but if she shows any repeat symtoms she'll be down the vet before she knows it!

delighted to hear the good news . and hope all goes well for you , if she often gets what you call a cold ,then the problem is probably minor . if you are happy with her than thats good mari
