Topic Dog Boards / General / Vets - good practise?

Picked up one of mine from the vets on Monday afternoon after a weeks stay, went in because of vomiting but later x-rayed and operated on to remove a small plastic bottle top madam had swallowed at some time :( handed over £690  and was given her medication, two envelopes, first for x5 Tagamet 200mg 1/2 twice daily, second for x10 Synulox 250mg tablets 1 twice daily. Now the Synulox enevelope had printed on it 10 Synulox, only by Thursday morning following the x1 twice daily routine we had used all the tablets contained in the envelope  Ringing the vet I asked if it was a mistake, or was it meant to be 1/2 twice daily = 10? They say no error and that the Synulox treatment had been started by them whilst she was with them and I had the remainder to continue with. So only three days into her aftercare she has 1/2 the amount of one drug prescribed? Is this usual practise, just alarmed the quantity labelled is not what is in the envelope, it wouldnt be allowed from your local Chemist I would have thought the same strict drug control with vets?

We have just come back from her check up this morning, everything is fine but guess what? Yep, they feel she should still be on the Synulox, better safe than sorry, and charged me another £7.50 for x6 Synulox tablets    Something smells or am I being unfair on my vets... any vet nurses out there?

That doesnt sound right to me. I am a vet nurse and, for a start, when animals are in being kept in, they are generally given synulox injection, I think it is quite odd that they gave the tablet version.
Also, when the owner goes home, they should have the envelope/prescription label matching the contents. If they had given tablets, they wouldnt have prescribed them at the beginning of her stay and then continued to use them up. They have gone wrong there. If it said 10...there should have been 10.

Thanks... thats what we thought, but after speaking to the receptionist/nurse twice they are sticking to their guns :( thats £1300 we have handed them in @ 6 months in blind faith... even getting a break down of the bill was like pulling teeth...its the last visit we will be taking to this vet

You said you dog was in the vets for a week? If so, the vet may well have started the tablets before you took her home. Antibiotic tablets usually begin the day after an op. If you felt that you were cheated on the bill it is not likely to be for what amounts to £3.50 worth of pills.

My dog needed surgery and I left her at the vet for a day after the op, which I did not need to - my vet started the antibiotic tablet, as he should have .. I didn't consider myself shortchanged a tablet.

yes, but thats not the point. On the envelope it said ther were 10...and from what I am picking up....I may have misread it...there werent 10 in there.
It is very very unusual for a vet to administer synulox as a tablet anyway. They are 99% of the time administered via sub cut injection. I dont know any vet that gives the tablet form (while the animal is in their care), besides which, the injection works quicker and is cheaper.

i agree.......the envelope said 10, so the point is is there a good reason for the others being gone? i see exactly where you are coming from. i work in a hospital, and every single tablet needs to be accounted for....its not the money either. if they were given to the dog for which they were prescribed, all well and good. My worry would be if someone unauthorised took the tablets to use on their own pet without prescription. That is why it is good practise to account for every tablet.

 That reminds me to get my insurance sorted out asap!

Hope the poor honey is doing ok now? Staffy's make such easy patients don't they? If they'd complain a little more then their ailments could be picked up so much earlier!
