Hello!
I have a 6 month old Staff, and currently he is on a small breakfast, bakers complete lunch and meat for dinner. We have been told that we should be reducing his meals to 2 a day, but at the moment he is hungry in the morning and needs just a little something to get him going in the morning. Please let me know what should be the age to reduce the numbers if meals??

My puppies are 5 months old, and I was planning on reducing the feeds to 2 at the six month stage. However my adults are on 2 meals anyway but I certainly think that it's right to give them breakfast. My lot have a half size meal at 6am, then their main meal(twice as much as breakfast) at 3 pm. They also get shapes biscuits and other little treats at other times too. I hope I don't offend by saying this, but you do know that your puppy should be on the same amount of food a day, just split differently.

I reduced Toby down to two meals a day at 6months, you should still give the same amount of food just divided into two meals instead of three, you may find if you do this he may not be so hungry in the morning,

As a rough guide I aways recommend that puppies have their daily allowance shared between 3 meals a day at three months of age, 2 meals a day at six months of age and 1 meal a day at nine months of age.
As an adult, as long as the daily amount of food is not exceeded is doesn't matter if it is given in two meals or all given in one meal. It is down to personal preference and what suits the dog ie the dog may not finish all of the daily ration if it is given in one meal.

Thanks everyone..this is a help. And I have taken no offence at all, I presumed that he would need the same amount of food ;-)

Some pups will tell you when they need to drop a meal as they will start to refuse either breakfast or the midday meal....

I usualy increase the 2 meals I want to keep going and reduce the one to drop, the pup will then stop being interested in the middle meal.

I was just going to ask almost excately the same thing. Becks is only four months but he doesnt really want his lunchtime meal anymore, should I drop it? He is on Naturediet, puppy. Also what age do pups go on to adult food?

Hi
My ISBT is 14mths old and I still feed him 3 times a day. I dont think it matters so long as you feed the right amount to suit the dogs weight. I have read about feeding and also I have seen on t.v that it isnt always a good idea to feed a dog just one or two big meals as it can block up their digestive system, I mean people dont eat just one big meal a day so why should dogs want to??

I couldn't have gave my adult dog just one meal a day...she could never eat it all, and then be hungry. So I split it into 2/3 depending on her. A much happier dog then, and she filled out a lot better.
