My pc has gone really gone slow for some reason . I have tried to delete any stuff I dont need and create more space but its still slow .
Even my broadband has gone slow :(
Anyone have any ideas why and what I can do about it ?
I am on my pc loads and really need to speed it up  ( not just on Champdogs I might add ;) )
Can I add extra memory and if so - how ??

You can buy extra memory and can fit it yourself(wasn't brave enough-got PC world to fit mine)

p.s. silly question but you are de-fragging your pc aren't you!

do you have adquate anti virus software installed? i had a problems with mine running at a snails pace a while back and it was down to a nice little worm running in the background.
Archer-Defrag ????hmm what am i not doing?Sandra.

Archer, please let us know what it is. I too feel I may be overdue a de-fragg!! :)
Thank god I'm not the only one or is this a thing to make you sound superior, come on tell all.sandra.
I've de-fragged ours a few times but it seems to take hours. I *think* it's where it rearranges the files in your comp that are *fragmented* (hence the word de-frag). If you imagine these are files ------------ and you delete a few so they end up like this -- -- -- - ---- - the comp rearranges and squishes them all back up again.
Somebody please tell me if that's a load of nonsense and I've just embarrassed meself! (but be gentle) :D :D
Kath.
Edit. You do it by going to Start-> programs-> accessories-> system tools-> disk defragmenter. :)

yes your right kath :) it sort of squashes everything together to make things run faster and give you more space, i do mine once a week and never get any problems :)
to defrag :- click on start
then all programs
then accessories
then system tools
then disk defragmenter ...... mine takes about 30 mins to do, but could take longer if youv'e never done it hope this helps :)
Thanks Jacki. :)
That's probably why mine takes ages, I don't do it often enough.

do a complete virus scan, with up to date definitions...you could have a virus if you are online a lot. make sure you have a firewall too.

Cant find any viruses - it is really starting to p*** me of now

lel do you have lots of things running at the same time even in the background? cos this can sometimes cause slowness too :)

After checking out the virus possibility, defragmenting, have you checked out the amount of 'free space' on your hard drive? this will give you an indication if you need more memory! Remember although it is relatively easy to add more memory sticks, you still have to have a motherboard which is capable of taking it! and a processer that can run it.Oh the joys of modern technology :)

Have you tried just shutting the PC down (only applies if you leave it on all the time) - Windows needs the PC to be shut down every now and again.
Sorry if you have already tried this :D

If you run a complicated background and screen saver these can use alot of memory so its better to have no screen saver and a simple background

We defrag every week .We didn't do it at all for the first year and it took hours when we did it for the first time-no one tells you these things when you buy a pc do they!!
Archer
No they don't Archer. :( Good job I've got an 18yo son to advise me. In fact I started with the tooo slowwwww problem myself yesterday (must be contagious, LEL!) though I know my problem is my 15yo lad downloading games galore onto it :( Tried to sort it yesterday and it's got a bit faster but getting annoying pop ups now (including one that says "Kill Annoying Pop-ups!!") Got it bit more deleting to do then a humongous de-frag. :D :D

There is something you can download that kills those annoying pop ups.
We have it at home on our pc.
Will ask boyf later and let you know what its called.
Think ours needs a defrag too but then the silly man of mine has started to download lots of music etc, also we have a wireless network so thats slowed it down.
Toying with whether to get a faster machine(only 2years old) or just upgrade. have to wait and see what happens this weekend when we defrag and delete a lot of stuff.

Pop ups
Check out "shoot the messenger" at http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm I am currently using it on Win XP and it has stopped them dead.

As well as defrag it might be worth running "Disk Cleanup" as well

name is: another.ie.popupkiller.
go to download.com and type up pop up for loads of killers.
Thanks guys for all the popup killers. I will investigate them and consult my in-house computer expert. (4 came up while I wrote that :( ) It's got worse since yesterday. One asks if I want my p*n*s enlarging. I'm a girl for Gods sake!! Younger son has some explaining to do :D
I started a defrag at 10am today and it finished at 7.30pm !! Must do it more often. My son told me (halfway through :( ) that it makes it quicker if you shut down all the programmes except explorer (it needs that). To do that, right click on the stuff on the task bar and close. Also do alt/ control/delete and shut the stuff on that menu too. Halfway through and I nearly shut down the defrag programme :D )
It's been hell not going on the comp all day but at least I got some housework done :D

We had a problem with the PC slowing down a few weeks ago, our virus scan found nothing because it wasn't actually a virus, it was programme running in the background, can't remember the exact name CW something, we downloaded a programme called shredder and that solved the problem.
Scrolling down this forum was a nightmare took forever and on other forums as well.
Ingrid
Will do Karen, though now I've deleted some of me laddos games and stuff (with his permission, I'm not that mean :D ) I'm going to try a disk clean up and delete some cookies and see if that works. I'll let you know. :)
Something else it's started doing... if I bring up a page in a new window, everything locks up for about 20-30 seconds. Same happens sometimes when a pop up occurs, and if I'm posting I can be merrily typing away then look at the screen and nothing's there. Oh Gggrrrrr
Kath.
I did a disk clean up, deleted cookies and no joy but I've just done a *thorough* scandisk and it seems to have cured the slowness so try that Lel, if you've not done it already. :)
I'll have to wait and see if the pop ups are cured but so far so good. :) :)
Kath.
Hi Karen,
Well I didn't need to put a pop up killer on in the end. My son had to format the whole hard disk as it was just locking up all the time. :( At least it works now and we've got rid of all the rubbish. :D
Have you managed to sort yours out Lel? :)

Hi Kath
no, its still a pain in the backside!!!

So far I have deleted everything possible to create space ( which it says there is plenty of)
I have scan disked , used maintenance wizard , defragging is going to take over 24 hours at this rate and I have emptied all my history and temporaray files . I even used a clean up programme and NONE of it has made ANY difference
Think a new one i in order as it is really getting to me now :(
Oh no. :( I wish I could lend you my son. :D A format might work for you, but you'd need to copy everything to disk first (my son had a spare hard disk so made it easier) and then install all your programmes and settings etc again. Having said that, you'd have to do that with a new disk anyway. My son has formatted his own comp a few times and says his friend formats his every six months.

Kath.
