We have just recently had to have our treasured pet put to sleep owing to cirrhosis of the liver. She was only 8 and we are missing her terribly. Is this likely to be an inherited defect as we would dearly love another lab but couldn't bear to see another dog suffer like Chloe. Any advice would be gratefully received. Also any breeders in the Cheshire area? We bought Chloe from a breeder in Bolton.

Welcome to the forun Gill. I'm not sure if it is a problem within the breed, but we have a lot of Lab owners/breeders on the forum and I am sure they will be able to shed more light on it. I am very sorry to hear that you have lost your dog, but have you considered a Lab rescue? Rescue is crying out for homes at the moment. If you would like more details, then have a chat with Mattie. I am sure that she will be able to give you details of your nearest contact :-)

Hi Gill, the condition usually referred to as cirrhosis is Chronic Hepatitis. To my knowledge this is not a hereditary condition and certainly not something I have heard of much in Labradors. I think you have just been very unlucky. If you would like another Lab I would definitely not let this colour your decision.
Sorry it has taken a time to post a reply, I tried earlier but the board has had a few problems the last couple of days, but I feel sure the Admin will soon get that under control and we will be back to normal.
Best wishes, John
