Hi, my bitch has whelped 5 healthy puppies tonight, and she still seems very restless, pacing the floors and panting ect, shes been like this now for little less than an hour,is it possible that there are any pups left to whelp?i do have the book of the bitch and have read it back to front (and ive read not to worry too much yet) but i cant help it as shes my baby.
any advice would be greatly welcomed, thanks, Jesse.

Hi,
I think you should have some concern. If she were truly finished, she would be laying happily with her pups and resting. Something is still going on in there!

It is possible that she still has pups in there, I've had a bitch whelp one day settle down then start again 24 hrs later and whelped 5 more puppies! I would contact your vet to have her checked out, the next longest I've had a bitch go was 4 hrs between pups and delivered a final 1, actually she settled down and fed the pups had a sleep etc then just pushed the last one out!

It is also possible that there's nothing left, and she might be experiencing a bit of discomfort. One of my girls keeps like that for a whole day after whelping, and there are no pups left inside (or membranes). In the Book of the Bitch it says they can keep nesting for even a few days after giving birth, and so I believe some bitches just do that. My girl likes to do some pacing, panting and nesting...for as long as 40 minutes, before settling with her pups, many times the day after they are born. But I'd still suggest you to scan her or x-ray her, if you are not sure, better be safe than sorry! :) Congratulations on your pups! :)

Hiya, thought i had better let you know, she went on to have another 2 puppies last night,i was starting to get a little worried,as she has no problems passing the first 5 (which is supposed to be unusual for the breed)i was speaking to the vet about him possibly comming out to see her,and out passed another 2 in the same sack which possibly explains why she was in so much discomfort, she has been checked by the vet this afternoon, and he said she and the pups are doing fine.thanks to you all,Jesse
