Yesterday when I picked up my little boy from nursery we saw a dog. It was walking up and down the lane wagging it's tail all the time. My son said hello to a lady walking up the lane and he asked if she was taking the dog for a walk. She said hello back but answered back the dog was not her's. We walked to the car and the dog followed us, I helped my boy into the car and was putting his belt on when the dog jumped into the car. I pulled the dog out the car and thats when I noticed the chain chocker he had on was very tight on his neck, and he had a green collar on to. He had no tag on, I was not wanting to let the dog go on it's way as the chain was very tight and I could not get it off him. So I put him into the boot and drove him to the police station. They took him in and said they would look after him. I was feeling very pleased with myself as the dog was safe and would not get hit with a car ect but my husband has now said the dog would be put to sleep in 7 day's time. I feel awfel now as he was so friendly never showed and aggression at all and I did wish I could have kept him myself, but with 3 dog's I could not. Did I do the right think, or should I have just let him go again and maybe he might have found his was home safe and sound. Susan

Hello
Dogs that are normally handed in at the police station get collected by the dog warden and the dog warden normally hands them in at the nearest rescue centre. Thats what happens around here and other areas i belive.

That's what happens here too.
Dog warden picks it up takes it to nearest rescue place, keep for 7 days then re-home.

hi susan, don't worry you did the right thing :) the dog will be taken to rescue were the owners have a better chance of finding it rather than it wondering the streets, at least it will be warm and fed so you have done a good job.... well done :)

If you'd done nothing & the dog had been run over or caused an accident, you'd have felt even worse. You did the right thing
to put your mind at rest you could ring the police station and clarify what will happen to the dog. some forces have policy to take it to rescue, but your husband is right, some have a pts policy. my friend was in this predicament, so she took the dog home and fostered it till an owner was found.

My local station gives them to the dog warden who hands them over to the rspca on a 7 day basis - then if they aren't rehomed they are pts :(
The dog warden told me that I can keep a dog for 7 days before it becomes 'mine' so now if I get a stray handed over (I'm known in the area as the one who takes in strays - lol) I let everyone know - police, warden and rescue centres - and keep the dog for 6 days to give it an 'extension'. On the 7th day the dog warden comes to collect it but I've usually managed to track the owners or found a new home for them by then (with the help of local centres).
I don't know if this is twice as bad for the dog though... losing one home then settling in mine only to be uprooted again but 7 days really isn't that long :(

Im sure the rspca in Birmingham rehomes them rather than them being pts. Sometimes as i walk past i see the rpsa kennel people take the dogs for spaying into the hospital.
Today, i saw a lovely greyhound... i'll be keeping my eye on him! :)
Im not sure what the policy is in the dogs home in the city centre...

Thanks for all your replys. I will phone tomorrow and try and find out what happens to the dog. The thing is I think he had been miss treated. The chock chain was right into his skin and was a bit infected, and he was very under weight. I wish I could have looked after him but my dog's would not have let him into the house and I would not have put him into my kennels with the younger one's as they would have gone loopy. He is a black and white springer spaniel and very nice natured. I hope he get's looked after now where ever he is.
