Does she do it to get attention? Is she being rewarded by your friend by giving the dog attention when she does it? If so, if your friend (and anybody else in the family or visitors to the house) simply turn their backs on her when she does it, she should stop - but it depends on how long she's been doing it - she may well try doing it more before she stops (this is known as the 'extinction burst') because the dog thinks along the lines of 'this used to work, now it doesn't. maybe more will work better?'
Also make sure she's rewarded for keeping all four feet on the floor :)

We had a patterdale and it could jump/climb over 8ft fences if not more, they are extremely agile.
I know that's no help but i think it's one of the things patterdales can do well !!

Patterdale are working Terriers and this type of behaviour is typical of a working dog in a non-stimulative environment. The dog needs work! How about agility?

hi thankyou all for your replies, no she does not praise the dog when she is jumping about but i do not think she praises her for all four feet on the ground i will tell her to give this a long try and perciver with this. no she has not done agility but i will mention this to her but i do not think there are any places that do this near us but i will tell her to have a good look, great advice guys any more please feel free.
