I have just found this site and would love some expert feedback please.
I have two golden retreivers a dog and a bitch, well we bought the dog recently and as vet have not sent to the vets, (big mistake)!
My problem is now that my bitch is in season, and i don't want pups, I have seperated them but i think i may be too late as i caught them doing what comes naturally on Friday, have seperated them since, my problem is now that he is screaming the place down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can any one give me some suggestions as how long they should be apart as all the noise is driving me MAD.
Also when will i know if she is with pups any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Marie,
You should take your girl to the vet and she can have the dog equivalent of the "morning-after" jab. Go first thing tomorrow - you may still be in time.
That would stop her conceiving if she was going to. It may bring her back into season again, and as you know a bitch's season lasts on average 21 days, you'd have to keep them separate for about 4 weeks to be on the safe side.
If you don't go for the jab, you'll still have to keep them apart for about another 2-3 weeks, until all discharge has stopped and her vulva is going back to its normal size (though if it's her first season it will never be quite as small).
One of the first signs of a possible pregnancy is if the vulva remains large and 'loose' after the end of the season. Other than that, you could have her scanned after about 28 days, though generally scanning is unreliable.

Hi
My bitch is on day 25 and for the past 16ish days since she became "interesting" I have had to put up with whining, crying, howling at all times of day, so I know just how your feeling. I'm going to keep my two seperated for at least another 4-5 days just to make sure.
take Jeangenie's advice about the "jab" It might help your vet if you can tell him what day of the season the mating took place.
Don't worry the crying eventually blends in to background noise :D

How can anyone sell a bitch to someone with an intact male without explaining that they need to be kept apart, one or the other going into kennels if the owner does not have enough space to do this for themselves. Would be interested to know who this breeder was and why they are so stupid.

I would never have the morning after Jab given to any of my bitches unless I was planning on breeding from them in the future. Much better to have her spayed after taking it through with your vet.
The injection quite often fails to work and can sometimes have side affect on the then born puppies, but the biggest danger is the bitch often ends up having a pyometra and has to be spayed anyway or possibly loses her life due to a pyo brouht on by this injection .
If my vet recommended the injection ona dog that wasn't to be bred from in the futue , I'd change vets!

Take your bitch to the Vet for the morning after injection and put the dog in kennels for the next 2 weeks, so that your bitch can have some peace!
If neither have been eye tested or hip scored, which I assume they haven't as you "didn't want pups" then it would be very irresponsible to let the pregnancy continue, and home the poor puppies to unsuspecting new owners.

What about bitch deoderant tablets and spray as this masks the scent and might calm the male dog down. The dogs will still need to be seperated and it dosent provide any type of contraception. When my bitch was in season she was given these tablets and was sprayed three times a day none of the male dogs gave her a second glance, but i may just have been lucky

You were VERY lucky Joze. The cosmetic things don't usually have any effect!

Mind i did put quite alot of spray on!! But i know of someone else who has used it and has worked but she also used Fem spray.
I must also add that i kept my bitch on her lead at all times and away from other dogs that were off the lead and places that were frequently used by other dogs, The only dogs she saw were my parents dog and my mother in laws dogs (all entire).
It must be that my bitch is just unattractive to these lot!!

I've used those tablets and sprays in the past (not on myself I hasten to add!) and found they worked well - but that was when I kept only bitches. If I'd had an entire dog in the house (who had already discovered the 'pleasures of the flesh') I don't think he'd have taken a blind bit of notice of them!

Poor bitch Joze ;) At shows, it's quite apparent when someone had used Antimate on their bitch by the fresh, lemony smell! The dogs know the smell too!

Don't remind me of that fresh lemony smell!!!! When I was a child and we had a bitch in season my Dad used to spray it all over my legs because he was convinced I would be molested by gangs of randy dogs on my way to school :D
And funnily enough I smelled it for the first time in years at a show at the weekend. I smelled it at exactly the same time as the dog I was holding for a friend launched himself towards the gorgeously lemon scented bitch!!
