Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Is This Normal? Yuk!

Is it normal for a dog to eat cat pooh. I have two cats who are household cats & use their own litter tray. I always make sure I clean them straight after their poops, but my dog seems to like the taste too! He sometimes eats his poop outside in the garden if I cant get to it quick enough but the smell on his breath is awful! Is this just normal or does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop him! He is wormed regularly and so are my cats. They dont eat prey as they dont go out, well apart from the odd spider or fly! The cats litter trays are kept upstairs out of his way but sometimes he manages to get to the top before I notice. He is a G.S.D. any suggestions?

Unfortunatly this is just one of the unpleasant habits some dogs have. It is normal (sadly) and can be quite hard to break. Can you move the litter tray to a place he cannot get to...or, you could try (when the cat is NOT around) getting some bitter apple spray and covering the tray with it...dogs hate the taste and it is used to stop unwanted chwing/licking etc. It might put him off completely.

It is called coprophagia...type it into google or the search on champdogs to find out more...I think it has been covered in the past.

Very normal, as far as they ar concerned it is Cabiar. the main worry is that they will get worms that the cat has, and that the litter may be harmful.

Cats requite more frequent worming than most dogs, if they eat a lot of rodents.

Just to add to what Brainless said...yes, that is true about the litter being harmful....It jogged my memory and I remember having to do an ex lap on a dog who had eaten so much cat litter that it had formed a dense ball and got lodged in its intestines...not nice (also..beware of harmful in the sense of toxicity)

cheers. I regularly worm my cats & as they dont go out they dont eat rodents so I am not really worried about the worms but I am worried about the comments on the litter itself. I will try to find a more secure place for the tray to be placed, the sooner I can cure this habit the better my dogs breath will smell :)
Thanks

If dogs eat eachothers poo's I heard if you feed them pumkin they shouldn't eat the poop. I wonder if you fed your cat pumpkin if it would work the same, maybe your dog won't like the taste of the poo.

Think it's pineapple you mean :-) Pumpkin is good for firming upset tummies ;-)
