HELP my cat is having her first litter and she is having some really bad contractions! they are getting really close, about one every 50 seconds and im afraid she is going to have them really soon. she is constantly screaming in pain, and its a really heavy sorta scream...i hope you understand!! um... well she is under my bed, and i am home alone. im 15, so im not useless, but i have no iea what to do! i first made her up a shallow box, with rags in it, but she didnt like it. so ive just taken out all the cloths and lay them there for her, she is yet to decide on them i think. she also keeps cleaning herself around the rear end... does this mean she's near?? should i do anything?? PLEASE HELP!!

thank you.. lil rachie!

Hello

Try not to worry to much, cats normally give birth very easily although it may not sound like it from your cats point of view, they are also normally very good mothers.
So try not to worry too much, she will go were she feels most comfortable, so let nature take its course, but where ever she goes in the house please keep an eye on her.
Good Luck,
Dean

Hi,Hope everything went ok..We breed and show cats so if you want to email us at colmarc@ntlworld.com i will give you our phone number so you can call us and we will help you all we can..Just lay a blanket in a box and try and keep her in it.If it is her first litter she will be really scared so you are better to keep her in the box if you can..Alot of births in cats are probmatic and we have to assist 90% of the time but hopefully you will be alright. After the births make sure mum has plenty of water and give her some tinned meat as well, this will encourage her to eat..She may not sever the cord from the after birth herself so you may have to do this by squeezing the cord with your finger nails,do not pull as this may cause a hernia and do not cut with scissors either..Also if mum has not broken the sack the kitten is in within a couple of minutes do it for her stating with the face, you can do this with a cloth or tissue paper..I am afraid it is a messy job but it will be worth it...Hope this helps and let us know how you get on..

Hi Tanni,
I'm not Mark, but I used to breed persian cats, and never had one girl that didn't need assistance. The kittens always have quite broad heads and tend to get stuck if coming out breech, and the other thing was that the mother cat (if first time) never seemed to know what to do, like chewing through the cords, or even getting the kitten out of the bag - I always wondered if they'd lost some sort of instinct somewhere along the line! Have had a couple of moggies as well, who gave birth happily on their own and knew exactly what to do.

Hi Tanni,Hilda seems to have beat me to it.We have British shorthairs and Exotic shorthairs most of our cats give birth with no trouble apart from one where i had to pull a couple of kittens out as they were stuck. The problems we have with them as i say ,most of our cats that give birth is they actually have the kittens alright but fail to break the sack and sever the cord.We had a litter of 5 kittens on Sunday and mum gave birth fine and broke the sacks but would not sever the cord.Normal every day moggies seem to get on with the job no problem but with pedigree cats you will find that help is nearly always needed..There is a big difference between the cat world and dog world as in the dog world you can come out and talk about the different problems and ailments that your dog may have but if you do the same in the cat world you are treated as a leper..i have seen this many times at cat shows where rumours are continually circulated...Thanks

Tell me about persians not having any sense!!! When I used to breed them, we had one who chose one time to have her kittens in a bag of potatoes   (this was her third and last litter) - her kittening box was in the usual place, in the usual nice, dark, cosy corner - she'd been tucked in there quite happily - nothing happening - someone let her out to the loo - and she then came back inside, walked past the nursery - into the utility room WITH the dogs & other cats, made herself comfy on top of the sack of potatoes & produced two kittens before I cottoned on to what was happening !!! She didn't want to be moved either - in the end, I moved her and the kittens back into the noisy utility room to keep her happy.

No, I didn't put them back in the sack of spuds!!!
