Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Feeding tips for our Akita pup
- By HOPPERS [gb] Date 10.11.03 13:08 UTC
Hi there all, our Akita bitch is now 21 weeks old and coming along a dream. She has the most amazing temperment towards not only us but to other dogs. My question is this, just thru reading champdogs and general tips we have been
feeding Kira a small tin of Sardines (no sauce and with any fluid washed away to reduce the salt intake) with one of 3 meals per day she is currently eating. She goes mad, or I should say goes good because as soon as she can hear the tin being opened i'm sure she would put lassie to shame with her obedience and command responce. She will be moving up from 375 to 470 this weekend. We have her on Purina puppy large breed and she is currently around 25 Kilo's. Are we still ok to be giving her her little tin of sardines as she goes up a feeding amount? I should also mention that she only gets a mild intake of treats and only when she is responding to commands well.

Hoppers,
My akita puppies were fed on Purina large breed too. I don't see a great problem with still giving sardines. My youngest is almost Eight months and still gets the odd treat of tuna etc. Where did you buy her from ?

We got Kira from Melodor Akita's up in Scotland. They have realy looked after us, can't thank them enough. And you?

Chris McLean.... I admire her and her dogs so much. We got Tara from a lady who wanted to re-home her, she was sired by Anshee Special Envoy and her dam is Anshee One-Of-A-Kind. And the wee one Freya was from Clare and Alan Buels in Derbyshire. Freya is from the Harivo lines, which go back to redwitch and goshens. Both girls have fantastic pedigree's and are gorgeous in my eyes lol. xx

Kira has a wonderful background with only 4 of her relatives not having a CC. I looked at your site, very athletic looking. Are they tall?
- By akita_lover [gb] Date 10.11.03 14:35 UTC
Yes, they are very tall lol. The oldest is 26" and the baby at seven months was 25.5". They are on a high oil feed now to increse their weight gain lol. Tara looks extremely thin looking compared to other Akita's I've seen. However our little lump freya is slowly building up, infact recently I'd say she was getting fat lol!

Do you have a web site? You can mail me privately at charlie@ukakitas.co.uk

You could not have picked a better person to buy a dog from, she is fab, really admire what she has done not only with akitas but other breeds too,she now has a husky, sandra.

Yes I agree and I would not hesitate recommending her to any one. She had just received the Husky pup when we was up there last, lovely little thing. I think I have some photos somewhere. So does every one agree that a small tin of Sardines are still ok for her on a daily basis? My girlfriend is slightly concerned tho that as she is eating a complete meal she may be getting to much additional nutrients but she is a worrier :-) I have also heard of an oil supplement tablet to help her joints, can any one help me on this one?
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 11.11.03 07:57 UTC
all our are on complete meal, but I always put a little something in that has the smell attraction for them even if it's only a couple of spoons of gravy or tuna, won't do it any harm unless you are giving too much, sandra. If you are feeding a good meal you shouldn't need any supplements, any worries get onto chris, sandra.Bet you're mum is stunning, who is she off of?

We would love to show her but it comes down to time. We are planning on taking her to a show training school after she has finished her puppy classes. To be honest I wouldn't know where to start. Any tips?

I give my bullies sardines with their food 2/3 times a week, i give them ones in tomato sauce or sunflower oil so there is no need to wash them just avoid the ones in Brine (these are the ones that are salty). My lot love them.
Karen.

Hi Karen, What do you have? I did hear that from somewhere that brine has more salt but after reading the salt content on the tin and compared them to the tomato and sunflower oil variety and they both had more salt than the brine? This is why I drained to fluid away and ran a cold tap over them? Where do you get yours from?
- By Lollie [gb] Date 12.11.03 09:28 UTC
Hi, I have bullmastiffs, i just get mine in with the weekly shopping at tescos.
I also feed pasta, rice, tripe, veggies, any leftovers and raw chicken wings, though i have not completly gone over to the barf diet, mine get these as tasters with their dry food, just for a bit of variety.

For Hoppers;one of the puppies in the pics I sent you is called KYRA!!!How strange is that and she is a solid red with white socks.Sandra.P.S. Star her at classes for socializing at least a.s.a.p. it's really important and let her interact with as many dogs as possible,I was nervous of doing that with my first one but now I try and get as many different people and dogs as possible to come up to mine to keep them social pets, well,on the lead at least.

for luconevar, mine love pasta,I make a great big pot of pasta and rice with ham trimmings and veggies and they wolf it down,do enough for a couple of days, but boy do they stink!!!!!!!!Sandra
