So sorry to hear about your mothers dog. There is no such thing as a minature German Shepherd (GSD) - if you are offered or find one, it will not be typical of the breed and will almost certainly be offered for sale by a disreputable and undesirable breeder. As you have had such a bad experience with HD in your mothers' present dog, it would be best to find a reptuable breeder of normal size GSD's who hip scores all their breeding stock and make sure the parents have a LOW hip score. Breeders sometimes say "Hip scored parents" which sounds good, but the score must be low, as dogs can be hip scored and have a bad result, its the result of the hip score test which is important. Perhaps a GSD expert on the board could post and say what the recommended average score is for the breed, as all breeds vary in the acceptable level of the hip score result.
