Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Alfie's not listening

Hello everyone,

Alfie has reached that wonderful age where he's decided to go deaf when called! He's almost 8 months and is a Rott and this is made worse in the last week because he seems to have found his testosterone as well and wants to hump all dogs he meets!!!! Now I know that this is all normal behaviour and part of growing up but does anyone have any tips on overcoming this little prob?????? I don't want to have him castrated til he's about 2.

You are reaching that 'teenage deliquent' stage......horrible, but they do grow out of it. If he has had the basic training already it will come back.

Why don't you want to neuter him until he is two? Unsocial behaviour will have become a habit by then. IMO I would do it at about 12 months.

I'm pretty anti castration until around that age because having Alf castrated before will stop him fully maturing (head and body wise). Rottweilers do tend to mature rather late and their heads don't properly 'crack' until 18-24 months. This is my personal choice as I don't like to see a male Rott with an under-developed head and body. I'll just have to carry on the things I'm doing and wait til he grows out of it perhaps.

Hi

My advice would be to carry on but to make sure you don't actually give him a chance to ignore you. So for instance if he is playign with other dogs, dont call him straight away as he will probably ignore you  but wait til he is about to come away himself and then call enthusiastically ..... he is then much more likely to come and will not therefore get into the annoying habit of ignoring you too much.

If you train through this period he should hopefully come out well behaved the other side :)
