Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / retained testicle in golden. help??

We have a 16 week old golden retriever male we bought under a show contract hoping to get into showing. His pedigree was excellent with many generations of U.S champions in conformation. The breeder stated the vet checked and found 2 testes at 6 weeks. We purchased him at 9 weeks and his left teste has been missing or sucked up ever since. He is now 16 weeks nad a few vets have advised castration? their seems to be differing opinion on when the castration should take place. We are devastated but want to do whats best for our puppy. We love him to death.

p.s any advice on how to handle this with our breeder..our initial discussions have not gone well

thanks everyone,

allen

As far as I am aware , testes can be retained until the dog is older .....there will be more experienced people along soon but this HAS been discussed before on here. Have a look [link http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?tid=30422&hilite=retained#215959]HERE[/link] and also [link http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?tid=18668&hilite=retained#133007]HERE[/link]

I believe that you should give the dog until he is about 12-16 months before coming to a decision
