I have a GSD puppy, just 13wks old and he keeps getting Diarrhoea! I am feeding him Butchers tinned/Pedigree smallbite mixer... he was on Butchers when I got him at 9wks and I have slowley introduced the Pedigree mixer as the mixer he was on (which I was giving by the breeder) I couldn't get hold of very easily. I am feeding him 3 times a day in accordance with the guidelines. He is otherwise healthy and happy, has bright eyes and a shiney coat but this dreaded "D" keeps rearing it's ugly head, he will go almost solid and just when we think the carpets are safe "BANG" it starts up again. Any sugestions please as my carpets are starting to feel the strain!!! Though must admit he is very good and always asks to go out, but unfortunately cannot open the door himself at night :) Also doesn't seem to go over and above the norm, just very loose/runny when he does

Have you taken him to the vet? He may have picked up a virus or bacteria. Also, is he up to date on worming? He could also be nimbling on plants or garden muck, which is upsetting his tum. With puppies, the possibilities are endless ...
If everything else seems okay, he may not be tolerating the food you are feeding him. Personally, I would switch him gradually to better quality food. Burns for puppies, for example. Or try James Well Beloved. If you want to add a moist food to dry, I would use Naturediet.

Could you just be giving him too much food? overfeeding can cause diarrhoea.

First of all have you seen the vet to ensure that he does not have an infection such as giardia or any other condition; this will only be determined by a sample.
If that has been discounted then perhaps trying him with a complete food such as Burns or Naturediet that has the minimum ingredients which may upset your dog; if this does not settle him he may have an allergy which can be diagnosed if necessary.

Whenever our golden gets the runs we give him a tablespoon of live yoghurt. This seems to help the good bacteria in the gut, give it a try and see if it does the trick but dont rule out the vet!

Eukanuba makes a special food for puppies with digestive problems (you only need to use it for 2 weeks or so until the pup recovers). I would get the vet to rule out worms first though (you may need to get a stool sample tested).

Hi Kay, all my GSD pups are brought up on a Good Quality feed (Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy). GSD pups are renowned for their delicate tums as you are probably aware. Rule out with the vet any infection that could be present and worms. Your vet will probably suggest you take him off any food for a short while and replace this with boiled chicken (white meat only) and boiled rice the gradually add a few vegetables. Over the following few days you will then be able to start to add his new feed. Hope this has helped good luck, hope pups better soon

Hi Kay,
Our 14 week old Lab pup has also had the very same problem he did have colitus and had a course of anti biotics and 2 injections, this cleared the colitus but i was still not happy with the runny poos. He has been on pedigree complete dry puppy food since being weened so i have kept him to this as i didn't want to change his food if i could help it. However i recieved some pedigree puppy pouches that i mixed with his dry food and hey presto solid poo. I am over the moon as this has been really getting me down.
Hope you sort it soon i know how distressing it can be.
