Hi it's tomorrow I go choose (well look) at a litter of Blue Roan Cockers as I've been coming on this site for about 6 weeks now and doing my homework in respect of puppies/dogs. I think I've got the theory sorted read the books etc., posted a few questions via here! Now looking forward to hopefully choosing my little chap tomorrow and bringing him home soon after as he is now six weeks old. 300 miles round trip but I'm sure it will be worth it.

I will keep you informed, we are so excited all of us it's just like christmas come early for us. We've waited for years for this but the time has never been right until now! Gotta lotta travelling to do so I hope one of the little pups chooses to join our family.

I think she is just going to choose one of the pups today, if I have read the post right, 6weeks is quite early to take away from mum.

hi everyone and thanks for messages. Well we're back! Didn't actually get to choose a pup, met the Mum, met the puppies, they are so so cute! Was a little disappointed not to chose one but there are 6 dogs, 1 bitch, the breeder will have first choice a week on saturday of a dog (she is also keeping the bitch.) There is another couple before us to chose and then we get to chose from the remaining 4 dogs as we have always been 3rd on the list. Never had a pup before so not sure if this is the correct way but I don't mind they are all so beautiful, I have no idea how we are going to choose out of the 4 dogs. She does it like this to make it fair and the people who are after us choose from the remaining 3 and so forth. she told me everything I asked, she also asked me lots of questions, will be there for aftercare advice always etc, met lots of her show dogs they are all qualified for crufts although I don't think I will be going that far but who knows what the future holds for now I just want my baby! Was a 230 mile round trip I was wrong in my first posting! Need a crate/cage now for the car anybody point me in right direction of a website to purchase one?

Hello.

It sounds right to me the first gets to choose then so on down the list. And to be honest the breeder is being honest saying they will let the "buyers" choose from the remaining. But that doesn't mean that the best pups are taken when you get your choice just the one the other people preferedat that moment.

Goodluck an even well bred litter is always a pull on the heart strings. Ask Dizzy she can tell you sometimes you just can't walk away :D

I could hardly contain myself when i went to view remaining Westie pups. The 2 male pups which were left were older than the usual 8-9 weeks so probably no-one who viewed them wanted them. I got there and was met by 2 of the most gorgeous playful buddles of white fluff you could wish to meet. I found it hard to decide as i wanted them both. I spent about half an hour playing with them then picked one and took loads of pictures. I'd read up on what to look for in a healthy puppy but was so overwhelmed by slushiness it all went out of my head. I saw the parents etc and how they reacted to the breeder. The pups were all over the breeder so thought that must be good. In the end i just picked one and he turned out to be my pride and joy Buddy.
And to think he was passed over by others who were'nt interested in him. I'm glad they did. I wonder how the other pups turned out. I left a blanket for him to get familiar with so could bring him home 2 weeks later with it. I held him all the way home and was prepared for car sickness but he actually loved the journey and looked out of the window all the way home. To say he spent longer with one of his siblings and his parents for longer than usual he settled into my home and me without any teething problems except sleeping on his own and toilet training etc which was expected.
He's been fantastic and i love him to bits.
I'll push of now i've rambled enough but would love to hear stories of others when they first met their pups.

We had talked about getting a dog for a long time but I always found excuses as I wasn't sure after having cats for many years. My husband said "I will bring one home as a surprise for you one day". I didn't think he ever would but on my birthday he came in with a cardboard box and inside was this lovely golden shih-tzu. Not the ideal way to get a pup but I needed this push and love her to bits.
A year later we decided to get a friend for her. This time we checked the ads and found a litter that was two days old. The breeder let us go and look at them and we chose one. Unfortunately it was a boy and we wanted another bitch. We chose another and visited once a week until she was nine weeks old and ready to join the family. We couldn't have picked a nicer dog. She gets on well with Lulu . Although she is much smaller of the breed she is very feisty and very loving. Lulu mothers her all the time.
Well thats how we found our two girls.

Re: crates - the best place is e-bay, I got a crate big enough for my 36" crate for £30, bargain.
The crate sellers usually charge about £6 P&P and it takes a couple of days, loads of people on champdogs have bought crates from e-bay and have all been satisfied.

When I went to see Oscar we thought we would have the choice of 2 out of a litter of 6 but when we got there Oscar was the last one left! Of course he was absolutely gorgeous and I am convinced we got the best puppy! Ok, so I am a little biased :-)
Good luck choosing your pup unless he chooses you first! ;-)

I bred a litter of 4 bitches, I hadn't planned on keeping one, 2 were destined for showhomes. 2 owners came & chose their show puppies - entirely their choice, then one went to a pet home. The one was left so, of course, she stayed. Guess which became a champion & won BOB at Crufts? :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.11.03 14:25 UTC
When a pup is left to last it doesn't mean he is any better or worse than the others. It is like taking a biscuit out of a tin of all one sort, the ones not taken are still the same.
- By pinarello [gb] Date 10.11.03 14:28 UTC
We had second choice after the breeder we had already decided on a dog so it was a choice of 5 , we walked into where they were kept and the pups were all playing but one walked straight out to greet us and we knew straight away we wanted him but it was the one the breeder had chosen. Later after playing with them all the breeder got their food and called them all back into their room and they all ran like mad to her except the one we originally wanted when she saw him she said oh go on then he's obviously chosen you, so really we ended having first choice and he's FAB!!

Thanks
Steve

we had booked a bitch brindle puppy and had named her and everything and the only other one was what the breeder had picked for himself, unfortunately ours died and a few days later the breeder called to say we could have his as he could always do a repeat mating, but somehow I think the lure of the money was greater than his conscience, sandra.
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 10.11.03 19:33 UTC
:( Or maybe he felt bad that he had let you down?
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 10.11.03 19:41 UTC
Unfortunately not,I don't bad mouth many people but the condition of the dog was apalling, and I'm just another sad sucker thats why I want laura and simon to be careful, sandra.
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 10.11.03 20:00 UTC
 I'd be the same and my hubby is even worse! We went to look at one litter who were kept in a garage and full of worms and he nearly had me talked into buying the lot just to get them out of there! As it happens i managed to stick to my guns and not help fund this so-called 'breeder'. (Mind you I did give her a bit of a gobfull)
- By kazz Date 10.11.03 21:16 UTC
Any joy on the puppy front yourself yet Wishfairy?

Wishfairy,I'd never seen a dog with a wormy belly or indeed the worms,my god it was horrific after we had wormed her and even the one worming didn't clear her but to see her now you would never believe it was the same dog.My pups at 3 weeks were the size of this thing at nearly 8 weeks, now I know I'm doing the right things for my pups,it feels good.Sandra.

:( No puppy news yet :(

The breeder who's looking for me was going to ring if he liked the look of any in a litter he was viewing this week but no news so far. He used his dog as stud again a week ago and has said that the bitch was nice so I might have to wait for these pups - but I'm looking on the bright side... the worst of the weather will be over by then so we can manage toilet training without freezing to death! ;)

It does get frustrating when there are hundreds in the paper every week but I've learned that buying off a backyard breeder isn't a great idea for loads of reasons... so glad I did some research :)

Hi Craigles, I'd go to E-bay for a crate. The one I got for my dane puppy is huge and it was only about £80 :)
I know what you mean about long journeys, when we went to see Diesel. we had a 15 hour round trip  It was hellish, and we did it 3 times, once to meet some Dane breeders before we made a choice who we liked the best, secondly to see him when he was 4 weeks old and finally to bring him home  Anyway, it was so worth it and I wouldn't swap him for anything now - Good luck with choosing your puppy, and you must let us all know how you get on :)

Thanks for message Sharon I had a look on e-bay but I'm having trouble finding a crate to fit my car as like my hubby says, I'm full of bright ideas and got a new car this year a Focus Sport (yeah really made for transporting my new puppy around!). Really having trouble finding one to fit in hatchback, although hubby rang earlier from work he was out and found one he thinks will fit in local pet shop but was 72 pound I think he said! Next time I choose a car (in 3 yrs) I'll choose for practicality of transporting my baby but for now I have to make the most of a bad choice! I'll keep Champdogs informed when I pick my baby up next week (22nd) and let you all know how I finally choose him. I keep thinking about that and can't imagine how I'm gonna choose but I know I've got to as I can only have one (for now!).
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 11.11.03 18:54 UTC
Know what you mean about the car, part of my life plan was to buy a brand new yellow MG,so I did, then I bought another 2 dogs,so the car went and we got a big van, much better and I love driving it,sandra.
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 11.11.03 20:51 UTC
LOL Sandra - No difference there then..... nice little yellow MG and a big van :) :)
We're exactly the same, we've got a Golf at the moment, but I'm sure Diesel won't fit into that for very much longer ;)
Never mind, a car's a car ain't it :D

Hi to all again, 48hrs to go till I pick up my life changing bundle of joy. I think we have got everything purchased and prepared. I was looking around my lounge last night as I was lying on sofa! A coffee cup beside me, a chocolate muffin wrapper next to that the same for hubby and daughter too and said to them 'oh how life will be so different next Wednesday' I know it's all about to change but I can't wait!
