We have all seen the judges that dither and look like they really don't know what they are doing. But today at Gundog Breeds, one judge with an entry of 44 took 4 hours to judge their allocated breed! Allowing for 1 or 2 absentees, that equals approx. 10 dogs an hour. Surely no-one needs to be that slow?

do you know where the result of the show can be found,i want to know how the f/c got on.

- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 08.11.03 22:24 UTC
I haven't a clue!!! Can't even remember who's judged my dogs 2 seconds after the ring so wdn't. be able to know that!!!!
- By munsters [gb] Date 08.11.03 23:11 UTC
tell me about it. How slow could she be! Very bored owner and poor six month old puppy that didn't really want to hang around that long. although i was quite chuffed with erin.

It must be infectious because our judge with only a couple of dogs more took just over 4 hours too! Mind part of the tim was taken up with posing the 1st [$ 2nd in each class for photos!!! One or two other interesting little quirks too - for instance 2nd in Limit Dog was called into the ring BEFORE the CC had been awarded, in fact he was placed in the line up along with all the unbeaten dogs - caused a lot of sniggering around the ring and a few"well no-one can guess who is getting the CC today, then", and sure enough, Limit Dog got it (however, 2nd in limit didnt get the RCC!:) but who needs to bother about little things like judging regulations. And cant some judges be so unmindful of peoples feelings - in one class she dismissed 2 dogs from the ring before finishing the class as "she didnt want them anymore". Ok, so we all must have had dogs in a class we knew were not going to be pllaced asfter the first going over, but why not leave them with the others until judging is finished when they can leave with other unplaced dogs? We had another interesting departure from rules and usual procedure when she critiqued various dogs while on the table, and went so far to go into details about the trimming of a couple of dogs and how the coats should be presented to better advantage. Even with the Bitch CC instead of looking at all unbeaten she dismissed all but two as soon as they came back into the ring! Oh we did have a fun day yesterday]) :) And a particulary interesting manouver, with most of the dogs on the table she lifted up a front leg, examined the underside of the paw, and then pulled the leg right out to the side and upwards to look in the 'armpit" never seen this manouver before, and a lot of the dogs were not happy about it. And to crown it all, she blew into the face of one young bitch, completely freaking her out so she would not continue showing (and this is a normally very outgoing youngster) Just to make it clear this is not sour grapes, as I was delighted that my youngster (first show out of puppy) won Junior Bitch & Graduate (both biggish classes) and her Father (who I bred but dont own) won Graduate and Post Graduate. Do you think some judges just try to be bloody minded and set out to ignore regs?
bye

Hi Gwen,

Emmmm..........

I wasn't commenting on my judge, he did a very efficient job judging 2 breeds in 2 hours. Lets just say this judge was judging in Ring 9 which I believe might have been the ring you were in?????? I think you can put 2 + 2 together! We were the tailend Charlies after this! ;)

Hi Lily, Ah, then thats why your comment rang a bell :) :). I have never complained, but suppose it should be done at the show, not after. thing is, it was not one of mine affected by the DCC misdemeanour, which I think is the biggest mistake she made, and I know regs. say a judge should not verbally critique while judging in progress, but would this call for everyone banding together or putting in a whole load of compalints at the same time? Everyone had sort of drifted away.
Dawn, I forgot about what she did with Kitty - the whole thing was just so badly done! I did find out something interesting today, and I suyppose rather sad (if I could drum up sympathy for the woman) she told one exhibitor while going over his bitch that she had recently come out os hospital, where they were desperatley trying to save the sight of one of her eyes - he jokingly said words to the effect "well, bear up you can always make do with 1 eye" and she responded that she was already blind in the other eye! Not a PC thing to say, but surely puts a whole new meaning on a judge being to blind to see a decent dog!!!
bye

Hi Gwen

Remember it "only" takes £35 to complain and I beleive you get this back if your complaint is upheld.

There's an interesting thought Christine how and when do you complain? As you know I show and breed my schips with tails and haven't done too badly all things considered, but I do object to a judge at a recent show who went over my 2 yr old bitch and said 'this is a good tail set I'd like to see more like it and then I'd possibly place them!'

Yes I had the option of putting me £35 on the table but how could I make a case when the judge whispered the last bit, even though the steward knew what she was saying you just know there's no back up for exhibitor on that front? Of course the other view is that I would be considered as showing 'sour grapes' because I didn't win best bitch or res best bitch ------ Keep getting 1st with her in her class mind so in the line up at least.

Hi Schip

I know exactly what you mean about showing with tails. Have you ever got placed 2nd in a class of one and had the judge tell you it was due to the tail? This was just after judges were instructed by the KC to "ignore" undocked tails.!!

I was so tempted to go in for the challenge

Lilymunster, you and Gwen are talking about the same judge! Munsterlanders and Curly Coated Retrievers followed 'us' into the ring. I too would like to complain about the self same judge.
She pulled at my bitch's topknot twisted her face and tutted loudly. Clearly my presenation was not to her liking. She then picked my bitch up by the back legs and tucked her feet under her body, making her look like a sack of potatoes. I moved the feet back to the correct place, and the judge shouted into my face, NO!!! then moved the dogs feet back under her body. I wanted to say 'Madam I withdraw', but I held my tongue. I didn't wish to show myself up at the time, but today I'm left with all this pent up rage, that I wish I had withdrawn.
I didn't pay £17 and drive 5 hours round trip to be verbally abused by her or anyone else.

Christine

Been there done that one, how about the judge who picks your dogs back end up by the tail and exclaims 'what the hell is this?' my reply 'a tail madam, it's not mean't to be used in such a manner and unless you'd like to explain your actions to the KC and RSPCA I'd appreciate it if you'd release it now!'

The worst I got was at Crufts with the same bitch, she got a 3rd no problem thought I, she's qualified again. The judge then told me that even he allowed her thru despite her tail being incorrect for the Belgian standard the one we should be adopting, reminded him that he was judging in England to the English breed standard for which her tails was correct.

Lets face it we know we're going against the grain by keeping tails but it would be nice to just once in a while have a judge see the dog for what it is and not it's tail. I have won BPIB and BOB with tails at Open level under some very well known judges, they just don't like it at champ level lol. Have to say though now there's at least 3 of us keeping tails in the breed so the judges are gonna have a lot to compare next season, Manchester will see 3 puppy bitches with tails should be interesting lol.
