Having heard about the results of the cannabis study recently (one of my young cousins has MS and having improved so much on trial is now on it permanantly) and seeing it on TV today I wonder if this would make a good pain killer for dogs?
Does anyone know if it has ever been used for dogs(says me thinking hard as Rio has broken one of the longer bones in his foot, lenghways, and has been given Rimadyl as a pain killer). Typical that he waits till the wet weather starts and we have to keep his plaster dry!

I don't believe in dogs smoking Christine ;) :D

i have never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life!! what was you thinking of doing taking a drag yourself then blowing it into their mouths, just rub some coke into their gums that will cheer them up and make them forget their pain!
OMG!!!

Seriously, Jackie, the cannabis prescribed for MS patients is in tablet form .... we were just having a laugh!

tablet form or not its still bloody stupid what you gonna do put him in rehab once the legs mended and he don't need it anymore
No need to be rude - it was just a thought. If it helps MS sufferers with the pain etc then it may help dogs - and surely it would have less potential side effects than Rimidyl

sorry! but there are other pain killers ,you don't know what the side effects of a dog having cannibis would be ms sufferers don't just have it for the pain anyway, it also helps the muscles in some way.rimadyl is an excellent pain killer if it suits the dog.
Jackie, I'm very surprised by your respnse. t was a post asking about a drug that worked for humans, and perhaps as it is nautural may work for dogs . Nothing sinister, so it may be an idea to chill out and think , before posting.

Jackie, perhaps you need to learn a bit more about it. The form of cannabis generally used medicinally is non-addictive - not the same stuff as people buy illegally.
Christine, I think that it works more as an anti-spasmodic rather than a straight pain-killer. The pain relieving effect is due tothe muscles not cramping as they tend to without it.

ROFL :D I must admit, I'm partial to a Rennie.
By jackie r

you can get addicted to any pain killer apirin etc people can end up taking it every day before they get the pain just in case and that is a form of addiction!
So then anything we give our dogs can be addictive???

yeah if its a drug and you use it for long enough you should not just stop suddenly, you should lessen the dose day by day!
By Carla
Date 07.11.03 23:41 UTC
so whats to say you couldn't wean a dog off cannabis then - if (hyperthetically) it was of proven benefit for the dog to receive it?
whats the difference?
By jackie r
Date 07.11.03 23:46 UTC
cannabis has a different effect it relaxes you but gives you a craving for more! pain killer addiction is coursed through taking the drug because you have an anxiety about getting the pain or headache etc
By Carla
Date 07.11.03 23:49 UTC
but you are talking about drugs generally! I know plenty about cannabis from my younger days, and the only thing thats seriously addictive about it is the nicotene you smoke it with. i agree that people can get addicted to pain killers - but surely thats more through FEAR of pain that actual addiction to a drug?
alcohol and nicotene are a far greater risk than cannabis.

i know plenty of people who smoke draw and they have to have it everyday cos they like the mood it puts them in and i also know people who started on cannibis and are now smoking heroin, its an addictive drug cos it makes you feel good and anything that can do that you will want again

Jackie, the only reason that people may go to hard drugs after using cannabis is that they are bought from the same people.

thats not so actually!

I must admit I do like my quinine .....
;)
But Jacki. worming tablets are given every 3 months, not regularly enough to instigate an addiction. i look forward to your response..

i never said worming tabs were addictive that was chloeh trying to make a joke! there not taken continuously are they.
All I would say is avoid the Diplimatic Corps, it's not for you :(
Get a lesson in communication............. being nice to people, and disagreeing with things.
Otherwise, grow up Jacki, and stop being so spiteful to people.

I didn't want to reply to your post, but after your comments, I don't see ChloeH anywhere...........and rude comments tend to fall on deaf ears.

wow !
how the blazes did a perfectly simple question end up in such a playground brawl ? Personally, I think it was a very caring question, obviously Christine is concerned for the wellbeing of her pet. The humour was appreciated also :D, I think the arrogance of telling her she should rub coke on her pets gums was totally uncalled for :(
I'm new here and I must admit - this isn't quite what I expected - I'd best go back into my corner now before someone takes a side-swipe at the 'newbie' :o
