Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / pregnancy blood test
- By landy3 [us] Date 07.11.03 00:36 UTC
I just had my bitch tested to see if she is pregnant. I know this test is fairly new. The vet said it works if she is about 30 days along. I just counted and it might be 28-32 days. I hope I don't get a false negative. I wanted the test done because both vets thought they felt something but weren't sure. Last time she had a false pregnancy so I did not want to do the guessing game again. Has anyone used the pregnancy blood test and did it work? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i've never had the blood test done on our dog, but if it comes back negative and you think she is pregnant as the vet to do a scan, you get a positive result on the scan, maybe doesn't tell you how many puppies she has as some hide up in the rib cage but atleast you will know if she is pregnant.

If it was the Witness Relaxin Test the makers (Synbiotics) recomend that any negative test before day 31 is repeated to rule out a false negative. I found this out after having my girl tested at day 26 approx.
I have had two negative results but my girl is still continuing to act as though she is so I am still getting prepared.(she would be due this weekend)
The literature that I have read seems to indicate that the test will not give a false positive (only in whelp bitches produce the relaxin hormone) but there has been instances of false negatives due to either small litters or there being a non viable pup.
If you have the option I think that I would opt for a scan rather than the test, seeing is believing as they say;)

ps once the blood has been spun the test only takes approx 10 minutes, have you a result yet?

I used the Blood Test on my dog when she was 32 days and it came back positive and she was pregnant and now has 6 healthy pups.

I can't see the point in pregnancy testing a bitch - after all you only have to wait 9 weeks and if she is pregnant at 4-5 weeks there is always the possiblity that she will have lost them by 7 weeks.

Of course people will get excited when their bitch is expecting pups but if she is, she is and if she isn't, unlike cats, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it for at least six months.

Even when a bitch does produce pups I still "don't count my pups" until they are at least 3 weeks old and up on their feet, it is at this point when you can be relatively sure that things "should" go well and that they can use all their limbs etc.

Last time we bred our Golden we had the test done around 32 days and it was negative. It was right.. she wasn't pregnant. This time we thought about the test again, but it became obvious by 30 days that she was indeed pregnant, so we saved the time and money ;)

Thanks for the responses. Eavie, they told me to call them the beginning of next week. Maybe they have to send the blood out. I don't know. Zookeeper, what were the signs you noticed when your golden was 30 days pregnant? My Lacie has a slight clear discharge, she is resting all the time when she used to be so energetic, her teats are bigger, she finally has her appetitie back, and she doesn't want to play with our puppy anymore (sad for the puppy). I guess we will know soon. Maybe I should have waited a few more days before we had the vet give the blood test. Oh well, I can't change it now.

The signs came from nowhere, lol! She suddenly swelled up like she had eaten a basketball, and her appetie went WAAAYYY off for about a week at that point. She is usually a picky eater, but it was different because she WANTED to eat, but as soon as she took a mouthful, she'd drop it and you could tell her tummy was saying "NO WAY!!" She also vomited about 2-3 times during that week. Her nipples swelled up and she also quit playing with the other dog. I felt awful that SHE felt badly, but I was also very happy because I knew this time we didn't need a blood test to tell us anything...my baby is finally going to be a momma! :) Good luck!!!!

edit: Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention she also began to get a very stringy, clearish discharge that was disgusting, lol!

Well, we got the blood test results back and Lacie is pregnant! We are excited and nervous at the same time. It makes getting all the clearances done worth it.
Zookeeper, did your golden give birth yet? If not, when is she due? Lacie will be due around Dec. 7th. Also, when did you start feeding her more. I am going to give her one extra meal at lunch for now and then increase.

Daisy is due Dec.1st. As for feeding... she let me know when she wanted more food. She was very ill all through week 4, so she didn't eat at all then. Once that passed, she became a HOG! I have noticed that she is much hungrier at night than in the mornings (some mornings she still won't eat). So basically I let her decide what to eat. I am lucky in being able to do this because she isn't one of those dogs who will just eat and eat because it is there. She only eats when she's hungry, and some nights that means she will eat as much as 3 cups of kibble, a lb of meat, and some cottage cheese too. It's amazing what she can put away when she's hungry. :)

Anyways, it's nice to have a fellow Golden owner who is so close in due dates! If you'd like, we can chat in email. CarLuvr22@Hotmail.com
