Hi all,
I currently have a 13 month old male staffie and I would like a companion for him. I would like to actually get another male but I have been warned that this may not be a good idea?
Does anyone have 2 males living happily together? Do a male and a bitch get along better?
My male is very friendly and is not too bothered with other dogs as long as he has a stick or something. He does play hard which may be a worry with a young pup. I have also heard that you must not leave 2 staffies together alone. Is this the case for everyone?
Does anyone use a cage at home? I dont use one but would like some advice on the use of a cage if I had to staffies.
Sorry about all the questions, and thanks for any help.

Hi Niki,
Do you have them male fixed or female neutered?
Thanks

Hi,
Neither Ruby is 18 months old and Murphy is 5 months old, previous to Murphy we had Jake who was nearly 3 when he died, hope to breed soon when Ruby is about 2-3 and Murphy is older, we have plenty of garden and are able to separate them when Ruby is in season.

Hi Lee,
I also have two Staffies, Mother & son. Ruby is 3 1/2 and Toesy is 8 1/2 months, they get on perfectly, and hopefully they always will. I am planning on getting another pup in the near future, but it will be another female.
Can someone tell me if they think two females will get on better than two males.
My in laws have 3 Staffies, a male and two females, and they all get along fine, aged 9yrs, 7yrs (male) and 6yrs.
I have a crate and the pup still uses it through the night and when I have to go out without them, He still can't be trusted not to chew. But I now have doubts whether to un-crate him even when he can be trusted, as people say they still could fight even though they get along perfectly. Maybe I'll just start to alternate to make it fair.
Michelle.

Hi Michelle,
Yeah the general feebback I see on here and other posts is that the opposite sex get on fine. I dont think you will have a problem to remove the pup from the crate.
From what I've heard two females can cause some hassles, but I dont think you can ever tell unless its tried? I have read on some posts of people having males living together fine and also the case with bitches.

Hi Lee
I am in much the same boat. I too would like another Staffy and was inclined towards another male as I didnt want to breed etc and thought a bitch and a male may cause problems when in season etc . After talking to alot of people ( breeders and owners) I am inclined not to home another male:(
Gus is 1 and is brilliant with other dogs just like yours and is so happy go lucky but I wont take the chance as the newcomer may not be of the same nature

Hello Lesley,
Thanks for the reply, I too have come to the decision of not getting another male staffie. As you say you can never be sure if the dogs will get on or of what nature the new dog may be. Also I really couldn't see myself passing on the new dog to another owner if they didn't get along!
I am just sticking with the one staffie at present and possibly a bitch in the future?? I too do not want to breed though, does anyone have any information on getting a dog castrated (esp staffies)? Will this change him in any way?
thanks
Lee
Hi Lee
Have just been reading posts about getting another male/castration. I have a 3 yr old male lab who we got from a rescue centre 14mnths ago. We was advised by the vet to have him castrated because he had behavioural probs, and since being castrated he is alot calmer. I dont know if it would change your dog in anyway if he has no probs. The only other thing we have noticed with Jazz is that since being castrated he pees like a girl :D .
My only other advice to you is to talk to your vet. You will no doubt also get some good advice from others on here
Best of luck
Michelle:)

thanks for the info Michelle. I have seen on other posts that someone recommended not to have castration until they had matured. I'm sure aged 3 is ok. The post mentioned that if done too young the hormones would not be available for the dog to grow into a fully grown staffie and they may stay pup like for their life.
My dog also pees like a girl when he's lazy or there is nothing to cock his leg on :)
cheers
Lee
