Topic Dog Boards / Health / HELP - My dog eats stones!
- By Jackie [gb] Date 14.02.02 15:37 UTC
Last week I was back and forth to the vet with my 5 yr old GD. We guessed that he had a blockage as he couldn't keep anything down at all and just kept vommiting. After 3 days of treatment inc. injections, blood tests, etc and finally coming home on a drip (I wouldn't leave him ) he passed a large stone! I thought that was the end of the matter as he immediately picked up. However as I'm writing this he is having another stone surgically removed .Following more vommiting this morning (exactly 1 week since passing the first stone) X-rays have shown another large stone in his stomach. Quite why he has decided to start eating stones is beyond me but how on earth can I stop him from repeating the exercise? I'd be very grateful for any ideas.
Many thanks
Jackie

It sounds like there might be a mineral shortage of some sort in his diet if this has just started - possibly calcium. You might want to do some reserach into BARF diet and adapting it to your needs (ie feeding chicken wings...)

try spraying diluted jeyes fluid on loose stones in your garden. no dog should like stones tasting of that, mari

stone eating is often just a habit......not knowing how you keep your dogs its hard to comment, but i guess just try to keep the dog area clear of stones!!! Good luck :d
