my pom x terrier is 7 1/2 i would love to teach her some tricks like play dead etc and roll over and give the paw is it too late to start ant help would be great

I am new to this forum and own a lhasa that I got from rescue when she was four she is now nearly 13. the saying goes you can't teach an old dog new tricks, this is so not true. I bought the perfect puppy book (Gwen Bailey), took it on holiday with me when we were thinking of adding a puppy to our family. My ten year old daughter has read this book cover to cover our 12 yr old lhasa now sits gives both paws upon instruction does high five again with both paws! goes down rolls over. She could only just manage to sit before! All this for marrow bone biscuits! My daughter is so good with her I'll certainly be letting her have a hand in the training of our Cocker we pick up on the 23rd November

I dont think its ever too late to teach them new tricks:) .My dog is a rescue dog who was two when we got him he's three now(I know still fairly young) but he loves to learn new things, especially if treats are involved. Good luck and keep me posted when she learns something new.

Try clicker training.....pretty easy to get the idea, and the dog goes through an 'ah ha' moment, where it suddnely gets the idea of what you want him to do. i think its ace!
Ive trained high fives, sit, sithigh (beg), spin, rewind (anticlockwise spin), speak, down, dead and rollover with a clicker
and my lurcher, now a year old, learned to sit the second day he was here, and to lie down by about day 4! (he was 6 weeks at the time).

No, it is never too late. Just be aware that it might take a little bit longer for an older dog to pick up new behaviours than it would do a youngster. Also be aware that she might not be quite so supple as she used to be.

Yes I agree on that one that it may take a little longer to train an older dog ! :)

Cassie the ten year old Lab I have recently is a real sweetie but is very set in her ways !!

I have had to have patience and a lot of understanding but with a lot of love and repeated positive reinforcement she is coming round to our way of life and rules of the house !! :D

She is a bit stubborn !

She very much likes to have things done her way ! ;)

She knows where the dog flap is but will she use it without standing by the door pawing it and woofing ? No !! :) She can use it as Flo has seen her doing it !

She was woofing at 4.00am this morning so Mike went down to see what was up and as soon as he went in to the conservatory she wandered over to the flap and went out for a pee :D

I have been taking her on walks and when we come home she now stands at the door to go in instead of going straight past the house as she recognises it !!

So I in all good faith, let her lead of and then open the door. Big mistake ! :)

She makes a bid for freedom !! :) It is a good job she is carrying abit of podge otherwise I would never have caught her ! :) Imagine as I looked up and there was a little old lady walking up and see Cassie heading for a collision !!

She loves digging. Now all my girls like digging but only do digging when they think they are not being watched ! She does however when she is let into the restricted part of the garden goes straight to a soil area whether pots or beds and starts digging ! I have been stood there right next to her ! :D I have said in a stern voice 'NO Cassie' and we have a selective deafness moment ! If I go and try and get hold of her collar she jumps out and goes to the next digging place and starts there !! :)

It has never been a dull moment having her so far !!
