My mother in laws dog needs to have its anal glands emptied again.
The vet did it last time because the dog got bad breath. I could not
believe for a start that by sorting out the glands would make her breath
better. Anyway it worked.
Does anyone know how to empty glands? If so how do you do it?
I know it must be such an odd thing to explain over the net but any ideas?
Or is it better to go to the vets?

Definitely get the vet to show you. At best it's uncomfortable for the dog. You don't want to inadvertently hurt him.

I agree with Jg, get the vet to show you. I've looked at stuff on websites and even got my vet nurse cousin to show me and I still can't do it. Luckily Bess's don't need doing now she's on meaty bones! :) There's a danger of making things much worse if you don't know how to do them properly.

I'll warn you though, the stuff usually stinks so don't get in the firing line! :D

Can impacted anal glands cause the dogs body to give off a horrible smell too? like old socks at best :(

Wear old clothes, be ready for a bath, take dog outside, lift up tail with one hand, place finger and thumb of other hand at approximately 8.20 if you imagine the anus as a clock face, squeeze up and in and voila! Yuck :)

Yep I think I will get the vet to show me. My mother in law cant do it as she has bad arthritis in her hands.
I know is smells like rotten fish. ha ha...
I used to have a bitch that when in season would get very sexy and back up and spray her glands. I am think it must of been her anal glands. It was awful, none of us would dare look at her when she got ready to be mated as she though us just wanting to fuss her was a good enough reason for spraying her glands. Oh yuk.....!
