My poor cat Molly had a skin infection and our vet gave her an injection of the antibiotic Baytril and a course of tablets. A few days later I realised that her pupils were very dilated all the time and she was obviously having trouble seeing where she was going. I took her back to the vet who couldn't see anything wrong and so I left it for a while hoping things would right themselves. Eventually I took her to a specialist who diagnosed that the retinas in both her eyes had 'gone' and that she was virtually totally blind. She asked me what drugs she had been on and when I told her Baytril she immediately knew that there had been some reported side effects of these drugs ie. loss of vision in cats. When I looked it up on the internet I was shocked to see that the first reported incidents of this were back in 2000 in the US - so why did my vet not have the information? It all seems such a terrible waste - she is only 6 years of age. I have been told I could try to sue but what's the point - the condition is irreversible and so in won't bring Mollys sight back - has anyone else experienced something like this - it is very distressing knowing it all could have been avoided. Cheryl.

Thats a really sad story. if i were you id get my self down that vets with cat in hand and show him whats happened , telling him he should have told you the risks!!
vets take enough money and im sure he never refunded you did he , as far as i can see these vets are willing to take your money but if they do something wrong , they figure there not to blame.
I had one dog i kept going back to the vets and they were treating her for so many different things , after she died. i looked further into it. i have a good medical knowlege and knew , what they were saying wasent quite right., so i decided one day id look up what happened , it turned out to be kidney failure . and that has alot of symptomsand they were treating those not the problem. anyway she was on special food costing us a fortune . the vet said he would take the left over 24 cans back cuz someone else wanted them . when i was there another vet asked what happened and i said i thought it was kidney failure . she looked at the computer and said , yes i think you could be right :( too late
