Topic Dog Boards / General / Cataracts?
- By Baby Dog [gb] Date 05.11.03 07:10 UTC
I may be being extremely neurotic (I hope so!), but recently I have noticed a gluey substance in the corner of Evie's (our 6 month old BC) eyes. Never having seen a dog with cataracts, I was wondering if she could be developing them. Are affected dogs born with them? Does anyone know how to spot them? She is healthy apart from this, and was eye tested with the breeder for CEA. Can anyone put my mind at rest?
Thanks
Bonnie

Cataracts aren't a glue substance, you can see cataracts as a cloudy film over the lens of the eye, they obscure the colour of the eye and are internal so you can't wipe them away, the gluey gunk is quite common, especially in young dogs, it can be wiped away with eye wipes or a bit of cotton wool. If the eyes appear sticky with gunk then go to your vet because your dog might have conjuntivitis.

I completely agree with Crazyspaniel. Whatever you've got it's not cataracts. Depending on the type a cataract can vary in appearance from some hereditary cataracts which are almost undetectable to the naked eye, (With a lens they can be seen looking almost like a Mercedes car badge) through to a sugar cataract on the eye of a diabetic dog which appears almost snow white.

Don't take chances with eyes. We all have our "Home Cures" but unless you are 100% sure of what you have don't use anything until you have seen your vet.

Regards, John
