Hi
Have been very quiet as my three all had viral kennel cough over the last couple of weeks. I am truly terrified as my 3 year old lab girl is not well at all. She wasn't especially ill with the k.c. and the vet told us to keep it till it got better as they were all eating as usual. She did seem to bounce back quite nicely for a day or two. Trouble is despite being fed usual amounts she seems to have lost a lot of weight quite suddenly. In the last 3/4 days she has been making gagging sounds and vommiting up small mouthfuls of mucus. Today she is awfully under the weather and vommited up the entire contents of her stomach about an hour ago. I have an appointment with the vet but I am going mad worrying about what could be making her lose weight so quickly and gag and vomit? Does anyone recognise any thing please?
Hi Gee, just keep her quite till you get to the vet. Does she have a temperature? If she does I`d bring you`re appt forward & get here there sooner. KC can have complications so it maybe thats whats happened.
Lets know how she gets on at the vets.

Thanks Christine
She is lying very still and not showing much interest which is odd as usually she watches my every move. I don't have a suitable thermometer but her nose is very hot and dry.

Hi
I hope your girl is ok. I had similar with my girl recently and she spent the night in the vets on a fluid drip. But they could not find anything wrong with her and put it down to eating something unknown in the garden etc. I know she hadnt had the KC around the same time but the symptoms sound really familiar, My girl went from 14.1 KG to 11.2 kg between thurs pm and monday morning.

Your dog does sound very poorly. A hot dry nose sounds like she may have a temperature, I agree with Christine, and get her to the vet as soon as you can. Better to be safe than sorry.
Hope all goes well.

Gee if she was mine I`d just take her now, she does sound ill & getting her started on treatment at the earliest can only only be a good thing. Your vet won`t mind. Good luck.

Hi Everyone
Took my girl to the vet straight away as you suggested Christine. Her chest is very inflamed and she has a severe infection. She's on an antibiotic and fluids drip and they will keep her overnight to see how she goes. I hate to leave her there but I know she's in the best place. She is quite poorly.
I can't believe how quickly she went from being a little off colour to really ill. I just knew that this was something that shouldn't be left. It really does pay to go with your instinct. I'll let you know how she is when I ring in later.
thanks for all your help

Sorry to hear about your lab. Hope you have some good news tomorrow. What vet do you go to?

My two older girls had a very bad infection from KC and antibiotics and some TLC both pulled through with no lasting effects.
I do hope your girl will pick up soon.

Hi Gill, I`m sure she`ll soon start to pick up now. Bonnie my eldest had KC a few yrs ago, it was her third time with it as well but after a few dys it went on her chest & she got really poorly very quickly just like you`ve seen. It`s always best to go with your instincts after all we know our dogs better than anyone else, even the vet :) Hope she`s home soon, Bonnie took a day or 2 for the drugs to kick in but then just like going ill fast she made an even faster recovery :)

How is she now Gee, is she home yet? :)

Hi All
Got her home at last today. Haven't posted as I just haven't wanted to dwell on what might happen She has been really poorly:( :( She has pneumonia and gastro-entiritis(?spelling?). She went downhill really quickly but after fluids and countless injections of different anti-biotics and anti-sick drugs she is a bit better. She's lost 6Kg which I can hardly believe as she isn't a big lab. She's down to under 20Kg and I'm desperate to feed her up but she can't tolerate much food yet. They gave her more fluids today under the skin in her side and she looks like a strange camel.
She's such a cheery soul normally and even now she wants to have the energy to be her usual happy self but she coughs herself silly if she even wags her tail. We have her home over the weekend on the understanding that if there is any change we'll have to phone the emergency vet. She's to return to be sounded on Monday and the hope is that she'll tolerate the antibiotics by mouth now and not need injections. I haven't given her one yet but here's hoping!
I always thought she was a special girl and that we were so lucky to have her but now I really know it. Will keep you posted how she's going.
Thanks for all your good wishes
Gill
Sorry to hear that Gee, lets hope now she`s home she`ll make a speedy recovery.
I know it`s worrying but she`ll let you now when she`s ready to eat, you could make her some broth to drink which is very nutritious. Make it with bones & vegetables for soup then strain it.

Hi Christine
I'll do that thanks. She's clearly brighter today and is beginning to show an interest in the world. She kept her antibiotic down last night and she's had a tiny bit to eat.Wll let you know how she is going.
Gill:)
