hi.
just a quickie.
Do samoyeds
A) shed (if so- how much)
B) have a tendancy to bark/be aggressive? (chase other animals etc)

thanks.

Hi Guest,

Samoyed's being a double coated breed require regular grooming to prevent their coats becoming matted. Bitches probably shed 1 to 2 times a year (seasons sometimes predict shedding) and males shed around once a year. Then under coat usually sheds first then the guard hairs. I would recommend grooming daily when shedding.

As to barking Samoyed's can be quite vocal and it is rare to have a quiet one, also they have a mind of their own and can be quite stubborn (typical Spitz trait) bringing a puppy up with cats and live stock is easier (with caution) than having an adult Sam and then introducing other animals.

I would recommend meeting as many breeders and their dogs as you can and asking their opinion, it maybe that the Samoyed is not the breed for you and it is best to get all the information first rather than a puppy and finding you cannot cope, the rescue centres are full of peoples misguided mistakes. A good breeder should vet you out first and you will probably go on a waiting list. Please avoid the free ads and certain internet sites advertising puppies these poor dogs are probably from puppy farms and have no Kennel Club documents and the parents have most certainly not been hip scored and eye tested.

Good luck, but I do beleive there is a shortage of pups at the moment so be prepared for a long wait.

Kind regards,

Jenny & The Wintersperre Gang.
