Topic Dog Boards / General / WINTER NOSE??!
- By Rachnew [gb] Date 02.11.03 19:50 UTC
After weeks of research i have now found out that my lab whom i love very much and wouldnt change for the world, is infact a cross. I am extremely annoyed at the place where i got him from, and have learned some valuable lessons, however my question is bogarts nose has changed from black, with a very small pink spot on it, to pink, i have been told its called winter nose, and that it will come and go?? is this due to him being a cross, or is this normal in golden labs?? any help appreciated. thanks.

my labs nose changes from chocolate to pink and back again throughout the year ever since we have had her she to is yellow

Some yellows do have "Winter nose". As it;s name suggests, it tends to come and go with the darker days. My Kate used to have winter nose. Bethany, out of a chocolate bitch tended towards a poorly pigmented nose for 12 months of the year!

Hi all, thanks for the replys. Someone told me to put sun cream on his nose in summer, is this true, or are they taking the *! ??

I put sun tan cream on my merle collie's nose as it is pink and burns easily. So yes if she has a pink nose use suntan cream.

i never new labs had "winter noses" do any other breeds have this?

In a word.....Yes :)

Lakelands and Wheatens certainly do and I imagine that there are quite a few others as well.

It's quite common in yellow Labradors Ice Queen. I must admit it seems a bit strange to see the colour fading!! You have a dog with lovely pigmentation then one day you notice that lovely black nose has gone pink. Later still and it's gone back to being black!

Hi it is very common in Buff and some Parti colour American Cockers, and in Golden English Cockers. Also lots of Blenheim Cavaliers suffer (or should I say are affected as the dogs dont realise it happens at all :)) from winter Nose. Juniors nose is now a sort of mushroom colourin the middle with darker edges. It will be almost pink in a month or so, and then gradually goes back to a lovely shiney black as the seather warms up.

bye

Moose my two year old chocolate bitch has snow nose but developed it in summer !

I have been giving her a supplement called pigment plus which main ingredient is elder berry extract.

She has now got an almost brown nose again apart from two small pink patches but we are nearly there !!

Lucy,

Can't remember where you said you got the pigment plus? Could you let us know? :-)

Gwen,

When this happens are the dogs not shown during the time they have it ?

Hi Pam, well Junior does not get shown anyway, so it does not matter in him. Not too many of our show dogs have been affected by it, but I do see a lot of it in the Pets who come back for grooming. Of course, until last month it has been a while since we have had a buff in the ring!
bye

our lhasa's use to suffer with winter nose though out the year, but now we don't really have a problem,we now give our dog's a beta-carotine supplement from, dorwest herb's,and this help's greatly, some people in the breed give seaweed,as this is suppose to help,i did try it but could'nt stand the smell

Yep, my yellow lab has a fading nose pigment. Goes almost black through the summer and now has faded to a chocolatey colour. It's strange, you'd think it would fade more in the summer weather.
