Last night my pup was really strange he is 8mths really good natured and brill with kids until last night he kept snapping at us all pacing the floor and hiding. I put him in his cage and he howled then we realised it was the fireworks although we didn't think they were that loud he obviously did. Is there anything i can do as its only going to get worse in the next few days?

Hi go and get some Valerian drops and just put 4/6 drops on his food that way you know he has taken them, they do take a while to work but then just keep him calm and he should be okay all mine on it now.

Hiya, where do you get these Valerian drops from? Baillie is absolutely terrified of fireworks, and for the last couple of years we've had to get sedatives from the vet for him, ACP? They seem to work, but I don't like to fill him full of tablets, if something else could perhaps help. I did try the diffuser, but this had no effect on him whatsoever.

Valerian can be brought from health shops like holland and barret. you can get them in liquid and i think capsules!

the other thing you could try is rescue remedy and they do this is Tesco stores in the healh medication sorta area.

Any calming item from health shops are really good, and grat if you get worked up aswell!!!

My staffie is similiar, she is absolutely terrified of Fireworks, the slightest bang and she's barking and shaking, the vet gave me some calming tablets to relax the dog so she isnt so tense, she also gave me a thing you plug into the wall which lets of a relaxing aroma, only dogs notice it, other animals and people wont feel its effect. That may calm your dog and unerve it slightly.

Good Luck

We bought one of those diffusers from our vet.....and so far it doesn't seemed to have made any difference, Scarlet is going through absolute hell - she shakes, pants, paces up and down and tries to hide in my wardrobe if she gets the chance :( I asked at the vets about pills to give her and he said that they can prescribe sedatives which would just make her more doppy and unable to react, but she would still probably be just as frightened by the fireworks. I've also got rescue remedy and some "gelsemium" homeopathic pillules (which I bought from the health food shop on advice last year) - I just wish I could find something to help her cope with this, it's terrible to watch her so terrified :(

Hiya Mair,
we were told the same when I first enquired about sedatives. I did only do this as a last resort as I really thought Baillie was going to have a heart attack - he was absolutely petrified. The only plus side I can see with using these ACP tablets, is that he doesn't even know the fireworks are going off which imo is a good thing for him.
I tried the diffuser as well, to no avail, but he just got to the stage where I felt it was cruel to not sedate him.

Homeopathic Phosphorus is the main remedy for fear of loud noises (fireworks, thunder...). :)

Think I'll try the health food shop again for some of the above mentioned stuff......and if that doesn't work, then it's back to the vets for us! These fireworks will most likely carry on from now until new year.....I'm no kill joy (well not usually anyway) - but these fireworks really irritate me now. In our area there has been a trend for breaking into cars and setting fireworks off inside them, causing as you can imagine, a lot of damage to the vehicles concerned. What I can't understand is how kids can afford to buy these "bombs"?!!!! :(
