I am posting this question for a friend as he doesn't have a computer. He has a 5 yr old male entire border terrier. He had the dog from 2 yrs old. His name is Henry and he;s very aggressive to other dogs whilst out (very very aggressive) He is wondering whether having him neutered or castrated will help the problem. Apparently, he says he had Henry in the first place as he was going to be shot due to this aggressive behaviour. Don't know if anyone out there has any experience of borders and could offer any advice. Any replies appreciated

Borders do tend to be dog aggressive if not socialised very very well at puppyhood. Try contacting a good behaviourist, you're vet will know of one. In the mean time do not let the dog off the lead ANYWHERE, if the dog is on a lead it can't do much harm. Maby invest in a muzzle if he is too bad.

So long as he doesn't bite a human there shouldn't be a problem, its a downside to the breed. Origionally hunting dogs they instinctively try to kill anything on four legs.
I had a border like this and just ended up having to live with it, no amount of training worked.

You may well be advised to have a dog castrated to help deal with agression problems - but more and more behaviourists are finding that castration actually makes agression worse :(

Castration is a case of swings and roundabouts, plus it takes about 6 months for you to notice any difference. castration along with consultations with a behaviourist and a good few training sessions would be the best bet. If you do take this rout make sure you communicate properly with the trainer, he/she needs to know what the behaviourist thinks would be the best way to handle him etc etc.

The dog needs re-training. Borders are not usually dog aggressive, but they DO hold grudges, if they are picked on they can become very sharp and always try to get in first. Tell your friend to seek professional help, losing his nuts won't stop him.
