This may sound stupid to you all, but my 16 month lab bitch came in for her breakfast this morning having ripped off one of her toe nails!

It bled like a stuck pig, but has since stopped.

She's not lame at all - licking her wound a bit, but still bouncing around like an idiot!

My question is ..... Will a new one grow back?

Replies please....

One of my GSP's ripped a claw out three months ago ......no sign of a new one yet.

I broke my toe 18 months ago - it took about 6 months for the new nail to start appearing from the nail bed - so I guess it takes a while for dogs too - make sure she hasn't broken her toe too - my BCxspringer did the same thing when she caught it in the carpet - it was very painful for her, but not a lot the vet could do :-(

We had a mini dachsie who ripped her toenail off. Took a while, but it did grow back. Looked quite strange without the nail though

Our Phoebe ripped off a claw in between paving stones, which also bled badly; a new one grew back quite normally, but I think it took a while.

My whippet ripped a nail going up the stairs, he's quite an allergic dog anyway, but after that ALL of his nails dropped out!! One vet said it was a fungal infection, another said because of his allergies it had set off a trauma in his body. He has only grown two nails back. This was over a year ago. But dont panic I think this is fairly unusual - unless anyone knows anything different? - Karen

Sorry I don't have any advice to give- it's a new one for me. Just a note to everyone though- There are an awful lot of dogs being taken into the vets because they're dew claws have been caught and ripped off etc. They're worth removing!:)

Provided the nail bed is not damaged I belive it will grow back, trouble is how do you know if the nail bed is damaged! Jackie H
