I'm looking for a show with obedience in South East (Kent, Surrey, Sussex) so I can see what would be expected at beginners obedience. Anyone know of any shows coming up soon.

You are a week too late. There was one last week at Ardingly, West Sussex. I am afraid I don't know of any others this year. If you are a member of a training club they should be able to tell you what is required and whether they think you are ready for it.

At least you will have a few more months to practice before the show season starts next year.

Thanks Sandra, our breed club has a show in January I was thinking of having a go but wanted to watch some others first. I've been practising heel work and sit/down stays. Also send away and retrieve. She'll do it all but just wondered what sort of standard is required.

If it is a club show it is usually 'Limited' to either the breed or members. The standard is not usually nearly as good as an open show, so it can be a great starting point.

Go for it.....even if it all goes wrong it is laughed off at a breed show in my experience.

Hi Lorna

I wish you had contacted me :) I was in the process of organising an obedience training day when you posted last time and have now done it - for February!! (See CD Diary for information)

Do you have a schedule - which obedience classes are they putting on? You HAVE to enter the lowest for which you are eligible in obedience and can enter one other as well (unless it is a special when I believe you can enter a total of three?)

Pre-beginners consists of Heel on Lead, Heel off lead, recall and stays.
Beginners consists of the above plus a retrieve, although Clubs can change the classes and call them specials.
Novice is the same as Beginners except for the temperament test (judge runs hand down down from head to tail as far as I can see with this), but if you have won out of Pre-Beginners and Beginners you can never enter them again and would have to start with Novice with a new dog so it tends to be of a higher standard.
I think A is the highest class that Limited shows can put on (no doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong) and this also includes scent discimination where you dog has to pick up and return to you with a cloth that you have handled after finding it amongst others on the floor.
