I do some Deer Stalking in the Midlands and South England. This is mainly woodland stalking. I would like to buy a smaller dog, mainly to be a family pet but also to take stalking, for tracking when needed. I intend to home the dog in an outdoor heated kennel with a good run.

I have had two beagles before, but they were pampered pooches and not expected to do any work.

Would a beagle be suitable for this purpose?

Teckles (wire haired Dashound) are great at finding the deer once they have fallen and also act as another set of eyes and are small enough to carry up a high seat.
Poiners are good at indicating where the deer are and pretty good at finding them after too. Don't beagles make a lot of noise ?

I agree with Ted, Teckels are excellent for this job. What about a hamiltonstovare? I know someone who uses one for this purpose, also border terriers are used for this very purpose in countries like Sweden/Norway.

They have started to use the Lancashire Heeler in Sweden also.
I would think Heelers would be good at the job but only what i hear from
owners in Sweden.
