Topic Dog Boards / Health / castration and weight gain ??
- By raffystaffy [gb] Date 02.11.03 14:01 UTC
hello,

all my life i have had dogs but have never had any of them castrated.
I know that females often gain weight. But do males??
are there any health concerns following castration at 18 months plus xx

I don't know many castrated dogs, but certainly some of those have put on weight. The two main reasons are that, for a start, the dog's metabolism slows, so he doesn't need so many calories, and secondly that he no longer gets agitated when there are neighbourhood bitches in season. If the food intake is adjusted, he needn't get fat.
Hope this helps.

A castrated dog only needs about 2/3rds of the food he had before he was castrated. He doesn't need to get fat if his intake is controlled.

All my bostons are fixed except 1 and they have never gained weight. They are perfect for their weight but they are also very active. I free feed them and you can still feel their ribs and have a nice waist line, So far so good.
