I think that is what it is called. Tiva had a bubble on the outside of her bum just over 2 years ago and when the vet went to relieve her anal glands the bubble popped she was hoping it wouldn't. Tiva was pregnant at the time. Any how she told me to keep it clean and it healed very nicely.

Friday we noticed some blood on the floor and relized that happened again. I have been cleaning it and it has the anal goo coming out of it. I called the vets office and was told to only clean it 2-3 times a day so I don't irritate it and make it worse. She started doing the bum rub on my area carpet lastnight so I relieved her anal glands they were very thick coming out not sure if I got it all, but she hasn't done the butt rub since then. She still has a pusy discharge coming out and it does leak a bit. I have been applying a warm cloth, wiping with alcohol wipes (was using peroxide) and putting polysporin on. I did this last time but I don't remember it oozing as much. I put a bandage on her and it held for sometime. She's still playing, eating still her happy go lucky self. Should there be anything else I should be doing. It does look much better then it did on friday. Of course if it doesn't seem like it's getting better I will be making an appointment for her. I just get over pariniod about everything. The good thing is that it's not oozing as much as it did this morning. Also how often should I empty her anal glands once this is healed? I was thinking once a week to every 2 weeks, I have never really done this. I just followed my book and also where her sore was located and got some out hoping I was doing it right, I think I did.

Thank you in advance for any help :)

Hi Dollface,
My old Tibetan terrier x bitch used to get this problem.
When it first happened, it looked like she had a cigar poking out under the skin at the side of her bum! It came up suddenly, within a couple of hours. She licked and licked at it, and it burst, with horrible pus and gunge coming out. I took her straight to the vet, who took a biopsy and warned me that it was probably cancer, as it looked so horrible.

It turned out to be an anal gland abcess, and he warned me that it would probably spread to the other side, which it did! The vet then drained the other side, before it burst, but it came back, so drained it again, and it came back, and so on... about 5 times. The abcess on the original side, which had burst on its own, did not come back, so I eventually made the decision to leave the other one to burst on its own, keeping the area very clean with Hibiscrub. Once the other side had burst, I carried on cleaning it, and kept the 'hole' open as long as possible, until it healed up on its own, and never came back again.
So I would say to keep cleaning it, and keep it open as long as possible, but I don't think I would cover it, as that would just keep bacteria in.

I hope this helps, it definitely worked for me.
Good luck,
Liz

The bandage won't stay on any more :( probably for the better. Thanks for the help. I'll just keep doing what Iam doing and keep her clean. I haven't checked her anal glands since then, maybe I'll check them again on friday just to make sure she is emptying ok. :)

Thanks again :)
