I need some some help rather urgently, how long on average does it take other groomers to comlete a dog from start to finish. Times would be welcome for all breeds, matted or not.
I focus more on quality than quantity, however, i'm not sure my employer feels the same
way. In a 7 hr day how many would you guys be able to manage?

It depends on the breeds in question and the condition of the dogs,
I mean a yorkie that is done regulary is only going to take an hour or so but a matted standered poodle is going to take almost all day if done propaly.
i have been a groomer for many years an have never let a dog go home without being done from top to toe , which means somedays i may do four or five other days it may be 1 really bad case or two.
Some companys prefer quantity to quality and so they book so many dogs in for one day they are not groomed as they should be, more like a convayer belt than a grooming parlour, just to keep the money rolling in.
I have a lot of new customers that say they have been to so and so's grooming place and have been charged silly money and that their dog still has matts or they just shaved him etc.
Do you feel that you are being rushed rather than being able to do the job propaly then?

Email me if you need to chat

If you ever get a Spanish Water Dog in e-mail me for details on how to groom them as they are not Poodles, Schnauzer's or Bedlington's. Some Spanish take half an hour to clip off but I have been known to take 2 hours to do one and even longer on one boy.

takes me an hour and a half, start to finish, to bath and blow dry an afghan. That is using a professional stand dryer/blaster, and that is probably about as fast as it is possible to get. doesnt include nail clipping/which would add 10 mins. obviously no clipping on an affie. :)

LOL @ perrodeagua - bedlingtons

Most groomers don't know what a bedlington should look like and leave them looking like poodles, complete with top knot

Grooming standards vary greatly, and a lot depends on what equipment you have available, and waht facilities. Are you doing the whole thing yourself, inc. bathing and drying or is someone else doing that, do you have blaster, stand dryer, cabinet dryer? I usually allow 2 hours per Cocker/Am. Cocker, 1and a half for something like a schnauzer, and also for yorkie or westie. These times can overlap, of course, as one will be drying while you clip and trim another. I usually allow and extra half an hour if seriously matted. I dont take anything bigger than cockers, so cant say about big dogs. If it helps, I have a couple of friends who groom full time one of them is working alone, ans books in 8 to 10 dogs on a busy day (a few of these will be bath and dry only, smooth coats). The other has a larger parlour with 2 full time groomers and a washer too, they tend to have about 16 - 17 as a busy day. Please note that these are all pet trims. For a full show groom on an American Cocker I would reckon at least 3 hours, and Mike usually allows 4 - 5 for a Standard Poodle Show trim (that is the full works). If you are interested I can give you the details of a groomers list which has some very useful and informative discussions for pro. groomers.
Bye

My Dobes - up to ten minutes if it is just nails, teeth and a quick rub over with a zoom groom and damp chamois leather - if they are moulting it can take a couple of hours or more
