a friend of mine use to use burn's on a puppy he bought from me,and he had the same problem, puppy always hungry!,
i kept a puppy from the same litter and the difference was unbelievable,my puppy bein ideal weight for age his being very much under weight,he did give the recommended daily amount ,and rang burns a couple of time's for advice, but in the end he decided to change his food, and now he is looking fab.
we feed royal canin(giant puppy),and have never had any prob's.i've never used burn's myself, and i guess some people will swear by it,but not every food suit's every dog,i would maybe change his food, chose another good quality food, but do it gradually, mix a little new food with his burn's and then increase the new food and decrese the old until eventually he is soley bein feed on his new choosen food, maybe over 4/5 days ,doing it this way will decrease the chance of him getting the run's.

Hi, I had the same problem with my Akita pup. I went to my breeder for advise who told me to fill her bowl. if she ate it quickly then offer her more. I didn't think this was the right thing to do so kept her on the feeding guidelines supplied by purine pro plan, and found my puppy to be underweight with no substance at all. She is now 7 months old and i feed her two large bowls of food a day, she eats this and seems satisfied, she is also adding weight and substance now. In the end i realised i should have listened to the breeder, after all she's been breeding for 30+ years lol! My advise would be to speak to your breeder, i hope to breed my first litter next year and i would hope that whom ever i sold puppies to would feel they could approach me. Its a game of getting the right combination and sticking along with it unfortunately lol. Nice to see an Akita enthusiast about! If you need any more help then feel free to email me at charlie@ukakitas.co.uk or visit www.ukakitas.co.uk

Hi
At the moment i am using Vitallin Lamb and Rice, but am slowly changing this to A food suggested by the breeder which is Davies Ranger chicken and rice. Feed a bowl of ranger food in the morning and the same in the evening possibly you could add tripe. Then before you go to bed offer pasta and tuna once in a while. I have been told this is a good way of adding substance and bulk with regualr road work on my dog too, she should hopefully get larger lol. Although i have heard good comments made about Professional Choice Heavy weight.
Hope it helps

I have had great sucess with Chudleys Puppy and then went onto Junior. My Akita bitch is a well built lass at 16.5 weeks, with a healthy puppy tubbiness. I changed to chudleys as i had the same problem with Burgess dog feeds. Her and her sister were fussy eaters so i tried the Chudleys as it was recommended by the staff at the Suppiers. They are both doing really well on it!
Oh, and don't forget that she is a large breed. Her protein will need to be lowered to avoid her bones growing faster than her muscle, thus making her lanky looking. My bitch went onto junior at 14 weeks which lowered her protein intake by 4%, doesn't sound like much but it makes a huge difference! Like i have said, she is a big girl, very well built and very very healthy!
I introduced fresh meat to her diet over the weekend, replacing 25%of her complete food with the meat. She loves it, so any fussy eaters may find this method appealing! My Mia used to pick at her food, making it last all day, now she licks her bowl clean and waits for her next meal!!!
Good luck with whatever you decide!

If you're not happy with the customer care dump them!
There are so many different complete foods out there, some better than others admittedly. I have just started using meatas a part of my Akitas' diet, its great! I simply mix the meat with the complete food they are on, replacing a % of the complete with the meat.
I use chudleys complete food, they have a good junior food for Mia, which she went on at 14 weeks and a sensitive for when she gets older. I feed Sensitive as Kindie has a wheat gluten allergy, as did a number of her ancestors, and i'm not taking any risks with Mia!!!!
Many Akita owners/breeders i know feed James Wellbeloved or Professional Choice (designed by Akita breeders for the Akita primeraly!)
I would give Burns the shove if you are not completely satisfied with them. It is their responsibility to provide the customer with every piece of information they could possibly need if it is asked for! If they cannot tell you what you need to know then they can't be all that good!
I hope you find a solution soon!
Take care

Caz above will tell you, i fed my collie cross burns and hills science plan, he was as thin as a rake, and always seemed hungry although never added weight. We took him to the vets several times who told us it was just the way my dog is built, but he is far too thin for that. I now have him on the chudleys and he is slowly gaining weight. He'll never be a big dog, although his bones don't stick out as much.

Lol W!
Poor Zac Zac!!!! He was terribly thin back then wasn't he!!!!
I don't rate them at all. I keep my dogs well away from Hills, Burns and all Purina. I stopped feeding Bakers 7 months ago and have since found Chudleys. Its pretty good!
Ps, thats your vet for you lol!!!!!

LOL!!!! Can't wait to move, get a new vet lol!

we have 4 akitas and feed them all on chudleys, the young ones also get raw minced tripe, what a laugh that is.I worked in butchers for 7 years and nothing bothered me so when I decided to give them this I thought No Problem, what a carry on,I aws holding the bags as my hubby split it up,talk about dry boke!Sorry folks, actually physically sick, now he has to mix it up and clean out bucket because one whiff sends me running for the sick bag,but the youngsters love it so I suffer for them Aww! any body else use it,great for putting weight on them!DONT ATTEMPT TO COOK IT!

Hi Sandaharr, I am just starting to use tripe as of next week with my two. My breeder suggested it to me. We are also just starting to use Davies Ranger, but i am wanting to move them along to Prof Choice heavy weight. Do you know if it is any good? I've heard good comments made about it.
- By sandaharr [gb] Date 29.10.03 19:25 UTC
Hi whitewreath, sorry haven't heard of this one, does it put weight on the dogs,I have a problem keeping weight on mine I even started to walk them less then I thought why am I doing this-so they look good in show ring!-so after that I decided first and foremost they are my pets, they want a walk, they get a walk and if they don't look good in ring I'll stop showing, simple as that,if you get any feedback let me know, sandra.

I was told by Danti that she used it to gain weight on her akita. Its specaily designed for the akita. We're giving it a go soon, so hopefully i'll be able to give you feed back soon lol. But our collie Cross is on Chudleys and he loves it. Miasmum has just said i should try it on the akita's. Think i'll give it a go!

Finally! another Chudleys fan!!!!
I was dubious at first, i thought cheep and nasty, but its great!!! Its cost effective, not full of crap and the dogs love it!!! There is such a thing as cheep and cheerful!

<hi i phoned burns today and they advised me not to exceed more than 450grams a day,she said to add boiled rice with each meal that will fill him up>

Added to the large percentage of rice already in the Burns food? These are DOGS not herbivores!
If you must add anything, add minced tripe, lamb, chicken or any other kind of MEAT.

Ignore feed guides, they are for the 'generic' dog that we all know does not really exist.
If a dog is hungry, feed it. If he puts on weight, cut back the quantity, if he loses weight increase it.

Years ago dog owners used a 'stockmans eye' to judge whether a dog was the correct weight and condition. Brainwashing by present day 'canine nutritionists' has taken this simple task out of our hands and has made us think that we are not capable of feeding our dogs without 'expert' advice.
If you are capable of feeding yourself and your family a healthy, balanced diet, surely you can manage to feed a dog?

It is in the interest of commercial petfood companies to make us think that we cannot feed a dog without the use of their convenience foods and all the advantage of 'a complete and balanced diet with every bowlful'. If we challenge this belief, we may end up feeding our dogs using cheaper and more healthy alternatives and that would never do!

the only time i use plain boiled rice is if any of my have had a dicky tummy, but what i do especially with all the fireworks going off is to give dogs a meal full of carbs to make them sleepy and not so annoyed or affected by all the noise and to hang with the balanced diet for a few days, and the dogs love it!!
