hi i got 5 month old akita just noticed him scratching round his eye,inspected the eye looks fine but it looks like if his got some sort of rash round his eye,hair missing.i will take him to the vets on monday,any advise in between will be very apprecited,thank you.pls do reply to this post.

might just be an allergic reaction. --going to the vets is the best way of finding out , hope its nothing worse.

is the akita being fed on food that contains wheat gluten?

Our dog started with something that sounds the same at 9 months old - vet said it was conjunctivitis. But it keeps recurring about every 2-3 months (he is now 18 months), so had his eyes checked by an opthalmologist, who said it most likely is an allergy. Steroid drops help, but she said a good thing to do is to wash the eyes out about 10 times a day with a solution of bicarb of soda and boiled water. Blood testing is an option if things get worse - she said the cost would be about £200 to find out what the allergy is.
