Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / which bowl...
- By guest [gb] Date 29.10.03 15:09 UTC
hi.
Do you use pot/steel/plastic bowls and why dont you use the other two? wondering what bowl to buy for my dog is a hard choice!
- By liberty Date 29.10.03 15:15 UTC
I have a heavy ceramic/pot bowl for my younger one, and a steel bowl for my old girl, both come up a treat in the dishwasher. I avoided plastic as I guessed they would be chewed, and/or flung round the kitchen

I use plastic and steel, dont know why really. Although have never brought ceramic as 1 of my lot has a tendency to pick up her bowl and bring it to me if shes hungry so i think it would be easily chipped/smashed as dropped at my feet ( also heavy and painful if landing on my foot)LOLX

I use stainless steel ones; they are virtually indestructible and easy to sterilise if necessary. Aluminium can be pierced and chewed, pottery/glass breaks, plastic bowls give off possibly dangerous chemicals (the reason why there is a sell by date on bottled water etc).

I use steel bowls for their food, and plastic for their water.

Hi
I use stainless steel for food and water. Non-toxic and unbreakable.

I use stainless steel for food and a heavy ceramic bowl for water (fortunately mine aren't into tipping the water out and they eat their food so quickly, the lightness of the steel doesn't matter)

I use Ceramic bowls, Perry chewed his plastic one and ate half of it and the steel one he used to bang against the skirting board at night!
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 29.10.03 17:41 UTC
Steel but NOT aluminuim, it's too light and has been linked with health problems in humans at least ;)

I use stainless steel for food and water inside and they have a ceramic one in the garden for hot days. Both types clean easily.
Plastic ones, if they are scored by teeth, harbour bacteria in the slices. Regardless of how they are cleaned there are still germs sitting there at every meal. Not good. Its the same as a plastic chopping board, hence the preferance for toughened glass by many people :-)
I do realise that there will always be bacteria in a dog bowl but they can cause terrible illnesses and the best possible care should be taken to keep them at bay!
Caz xxxx :-)

we use stainless steel in their stands and for their water (akita owners will understand this) we use very large buckets!!!!!!
- By Miasmum [gb] Date 29.10.03 19:31 UTC
Yep! But i have the water in a bowl in a stand indoors and the ceramic bowl in the garden sitting on a bucket. Easier. Or maby another one of my quirks???
- By Anwen [gb] Date 29.10.03 19:37 UTC
Stainless steel - clean & indestructible (or so I thought until we got an Akita ..........)

plastic for food, ceramic for water inside and a bucket for water outside, dogs at work all have stainless stell bowls
- By gundogsrbest [gb] Date 08.09.05 13:43 UTC
i would like to add that since having Bruce there is no longer a water bowl in doors, just a bucket outside this is due to the regular flooding of hte kitchen :D

LOLOLOLOL I'm sure my puppy, Roy, is part newfie as he paddles regularly in the water bucket outside He loves to put his whole head under water too :O ;)

I use ceramic. I am sure I read on CD that plastic can make the faces go pink/ discoloured if they are used as drinking bowls so I stopped using them altogether

plastic or polypropeline bowls retain old food smells in the scratches. This can put dogs off their food.Polypropeline plastic bowls promote bacterial growth. I have used scratch resistant melamine.Melamine will not dent like stainless or break like ceramic. Melanine is great for the out doors/ car etc You can even get anti slip melamine if you search around.Let me know how you get on.

used to have a stainless steel one for last GSD, when it was empty and I wasn't fast enough refilling it he used to bang it against the side of washing maching - Oh Zigi wants room service again!!!. Had to change to a HEAVY plastic one with a weighted non slip base as Zan (current GSD) used to put front feet in and water-ski across kitchen
- By Kkirgirl [gb] Date 08.09.05 17:38 UTC
I use stainless steel for their food bowls and ceramic for their water bowls...

stainless steel for food because it can be thrown in the dishwasher each night and it doesnt damage it, and ceramic for water because its heavy and cant be tipped over onto the carpets.

Ive never used plastic, as someone else said - had visions of it being chased around the kitchen floor or used as a frisby toy :D
- By tracychester [gb] Date 09.09.05 09:48 UTC
I currently use plastic but am switching to stainless steel. Plastic was fine for him as a little pup but now hes 6 1/2 months and he charges around everywhere and hes forever running into them and getting water all over the kitchen as the sides of the bowl arent very high and theyve started to crack.
