Poop and pee all over the place, chewed house, possible injury to your dog when you are not there eg chewing through live electric cable etc etc

Okay, here we go....
If you go away and take the dog with you it'll run riot all over someone's house or worse a hotel. If they don't have dogs they won't be pleased if there is and accident, if they do have dogs your dog may be the catalys for a fight to break out. Some Hotels allow dogs but prefer them to be in a crate. A crate stops these things.
If you have a bitch she can stay here while in season at night, not getting red sprinkles all over the sofa, carpets, your bed etc. when you are not around to clean up after her.
If you have a pup it will aid house breaking. Although a pup will pee in its bed to begin with it would rather hold it to avoid waking up wet and sticky.
If a pup cries at night you can have it in your room to keep it quiet without getting a soggy carpet with an accident. The crate can be moved, gradually, out of your room as the dog gets older and eventually the dog will happily sleep elsewhere.
Stops the dog getting too excited and diving all over visitors, it a crate it can be where the action is but not be a nuisance.
They are but a few.
Hope it helps!

It depends how much effort you are prepared to put in. I have never used crates, and my dogs have been housetrained quickly, and are reliable to take anywhere. I can see they may have their uses (such as staying at hotels) but I've always managed perfectly well without.

Ours is only used when at shows ( and to hold Gus's ever growing collection of half eaten toys) . He doesnt really bother with his crate and we never put him in it when we are out and he has never eaten anything .
Think it depends on the individual dog .

For mine its a sanctuary as well as a safe guard when we have a house full or go anywhere. We often have company and there is nothing worse than a number of big Akitas taking over the sofa! When the dogs get fed up they go to bed where they have their own rules, its their space where they can do as they please.

Mine has been a godsend this week - got the builders in, and although they like dogs, they aren't used to shutting doors. It's also used when I go away on doggie weekends/courses/workshops - can be used in relatives houses etc.......
