Its a Jack Russell, they were bred for yapping!
Dawn.
wait up thats not always true i own 2 of them the only time they bark is when someone walks past my back garden or if someone rings the door bell, then they stop as quick as they started,so not ALL jack russells bark or yap all the time,my neighbours west highland terrier barks all day and night.

If a dog is making your life hell by barking, then you must take whatever steps are needed to correct this,a dog is supposed to fit in with your lifestyle, you should'nt have to fit in with his, most small dogs are supposed to bay at the sight of prey, not the sight of people or dogs,so you are right they should yap,but at the proper time

You're quite right, leicester, but of course very few terriers (or other breeds for that matter) ever get to do the job for which they were designed. Hence the frustrated behaviour of so many of the active breeds (terriers included) who are very often bored rigid! Just because terriers are small doesn't mean they are lapdogs! Quite the contrary - they are proper working animals usually with full working instincts, for which they have to find an outlet. Very often if a dog isn't busy enough it will be noisy.

Hey!
That's not strictly fair or even very true. They don't bark or yap any more than any other breed of dog, with the exeption of the Basenji of course! ;o)
But seriously, if any young pup of any breed has been allowed to bark or yap indiscriminately without being trained out of it or encouraged not to do it, they will do it, regardless of their breed!
I have had Jack Russells and Jack crosses all my life, and I have never had a 'yapper'!
Caroline
i totally agree having 2 myself:)

Make sure she is rewarded for the times she is quiet (this can be attention/fuss, doesn't *have* to be a food treat, but some dogs recognise food as the ultimate reward, which makes it more effective) and more importantly, make sure she doesn't get any reward - such as attention or even looking at her - when she does bark. These two tactics combined (and it must happen 100%, no half measures, from ALL the family and visitors) and she will stop....

Thanks everyone for the replys. I have passed on your tips to my daughter. "Scrappy" is such a sweet loving little thing and I have only just found out why she behaves as she has. It seems my daughter was not the only one physically abused by her ex partner he would take it out on poor little scrappy. Hopefully now he has well and truly gone from thier lives they can both heal. I have told my daughter scrappy needs a lot of love. She has just been given a temporary flat from the council and has been given permission to keep scrappy if she behaves!!
