There seem to be alot of Questions about the prices of puppies. While i am happy to pay more for a beautiful and healthy puppy, Some prices thrown at me are simply too far out. I am currently looking for a coton de tulear puppy and one breeder quoted me 1600 Pounds!!! I'm not buying a whole litter mate! Just one!! Now i know this is a rare breed and the breeder has won awards, but 1600 pounds is CRAZY! or is it? I'm not too clued up about such things, can anyone advise??
Oh by the way i don't mean to offend the breeder should he/she be reading this, there seem to be a lot of outrage and questions about prices on this board recently, i thought i better ask. I was just a little shock at the price. My first pedigree puppy didn't cost that much...

£1600 that is alot of money, fare enough it is a rare breed but thats ridiculous. it doesnt matter how many awards the breeder has won you never know exactly what your getting. No more than £1000 is a fair price.

A white hungarian puli i was enquiring was only 600 pounds. And a white puli is rare in this country!

In Spanish Water Dogs we made it that we wd. not charge such high prices because we felt that the wrong people wd. want them. Looking at other breeds that charge this high price they seem to have had problems. The only thing is though, you've got to remember that many of these dogs have been imported, many are also top winners in Europe, although that means nothing here in England as we can only show them in the import register, but it's not cheap bringing them in.
Have to say though, that you cd. get two and three quarter SWD's for that price:d

Yeah i understand your point but it's not even the imported dog itself i am buying. It's the puppies which are probably a couple of generations further down the line of the original imported dog itself. i could probably get 4 to 5 healthy Shih tzus!! i'll probably seek other breeders ..........
Another Question, do you guys happen to know if it is safe for a 3 month old puppy to travel by plane?? The last time i flow my Shih Tzu on a 13 hour flight, he turned out fine and i was assured that he was put in a pressurised cargo area in the plane. But he was about9 months old then. IS it safe for a 3 month old puppy to travel?

I flat refuse to pay any more than £800 for an Akita pup, and to go that high it has to be specail!
I recently enquired about a White Dog, hubby wants one and with Kumie gone it seemed okay, what a surprise i was in for!
Pups are not KC reg, dam under 12 months of age, £700 please!!!!
Oh my god!!!!!
I went spare, as i do. They have since lowered the price to £350, still too high for such a pup but its an improvement.
£600 is the highest ive asked and won't ever go any higher. (won't be breeding for another few years like, too much on!).
They are, after all, only dogs! Its disusting!

Having imported a stud dog from the USA (whilst there was still quarrantine) I know how expensive it can be! Our dog was for very limited use, was already a US Ch. and has now gained his UK title. Despite this, none of the breeders who have used him have charged any more than the average price for the puppies. He was brought here to widen the gene pool - not to provide breeders with an excuse to increase the price of puppies.

Puppy price and stud fees) tend to be the same across the board in our breed, that is with breed club members who breed as a hobby to maintain the breed.
I part own an imported dog (cost us £3000 by the time he came out of quarantine) and will be avaiable to suitable bitches at the usual rate.
I have used Champion studs, Imported ones, and non champion, all at the same price, and with as much chance of producing well as well bred and hopefully compatible with the bitch.

Remember reading a story about a year ago in the news about two cocker puppies that were stolen and held for ransom. They were worth £10k each! Can't remember exactly why their parents were so super-duper but luckily the owner got them back.

Yes, well, mine are worth at least that much - to me :D I'm afraid dogs are like anything else, and are worth what someone is prepared to pay.

Its rediculous!
£800 is quite enough! Thousands of pounds for just a dog is stupid, people have far too much money to be throwing it away like that!

Anything in this world is worth what someone will pay for it. What appears ridiculous to one is necessary or ordinary to someone else :) This applies to ALL things , Beanie Babies , houses , animals , shoes ...whatever.

Well i know what u mean Melody but it's quite obvious they are trying to make an obscene amount of profit out of this. It makes u wonder at such high prices, are the breeders having the puppies for the right reasons. Of course, money is a factor but surely it's not right and would make him/her no different to a puppy farm if the sole factor is money. the Coton being a rare breed surely promoting the breed would be something to consider.
Of course my dogs are priceless to me but buying a new puppy, given that you haven't bond with the dog, 1600 pounds seems too much an amount to part...
There really ought to be a body to control prices really...expensive fine, but not to the point of being ridiculous.
My search continues.......................

Makes, me laugh because I think that this was one of the reasons why the KC brought in the Import Register thinking that if the dogs couldn't be shown etc. that they wouldn't be sold at such high prices. Unfortunately it hasn't worked in some breeds, where as others we have ensured that we keep the price of our pups low. I wd. not pay more than £700.00 for a Spanish, although I sell mine for £600.

Hi, well reading your line "there should be a body to control such ridiculous prices" certainly made me laugh - It would come under the heading of restrictive trade practices, and would be illegal. If you are not happy about the price of something, walk away. Some of these highly priced pups are so priced to scare of the wrong people, because they come from hard to breed lines, or because they have been very expensive to produce (costly imported parents etc, etc). And yes, of course some are simply priced high because people see the chance to make a fast buck. But whatever the reason, people have a right to ask whatever they want for anything they are selling :). We have paid in excess of $5000 dollars, plus flights, quarantine, etc to import dogs from the USA. Total cost was about £5000 when she came out of quarantine, we certianly felt justified in asking a little extra for her babes (and have been justified in doing so by results) Have also had to factor in future potential stud fee earnings when selling very promising young dogs. The 2 cockers who were stolen then recovered earlier this year were from the very well known Charbonnel (Sandy Platt) kennel. I am sure she had her own sound reason for so valuing them.
We had a litter last year after flying a bitch out to the USA, then bringing her back to whelp, add in the stud fee, boarding costs etc, and this was a very costly litter. We are expecting another any minute now after using AI, having shipped semen in from the USA, another costly process. Should any of these pups be available to show homes then the prices will probably reflect the added expense of acheiving them! I cant understand people feeling they have a right to dictate what someone else should sell anything for - used to sell Horses and Ponies for thousands of pounds, and no-one ever said they were over priced!
bye

Well i have to admit i'm not too clued up about all the processes involved...you know, the importing and all that....and perhaps the amount ask was justified in some way. But we can't discount the fact that some are in it for a quick buck....So perhaps the control body can not so much restrict asking price but check if asking price is justified??
So anyway, I'm not looking to show my dog, i just want a new family member. So maybe they are the wrong breeder for me and vice versa.

I paid £1000 for each of my dogue de bordeaux which I was quite happy to do to get the best lines that I thought were right for me, I know pups are available on sites such as Loot and Exchange and Mart for around £300-500 but I would rather pay a reputable breeder that will sell me a pup with the right health checks done and 24 hour help line if I need it, I do not begrudge paying the breeder for the time and love, which can have no cost put on it, that they have put into my pup. There are breeder's in the North east selling Bordeaux for £300 but on making enquirys no health checks have been done, no show or club interest, and the have 2 or 3 litter for you to pick from are they just churning out pups for the breed rescue to pick up by the time they are 12 month old.
how much should a parson russell terrier bitch be plus i have to get her brought over to me as iam in ireland
my dad paid £2500 sterling in 1988 for his dobermann pincher and i must say he was worth every single penny he was a total sweetheart
